also the bottom rad pipe is cold and the 2 pipes that go through the bulk head are cold even when the engine is at temp

update,

just put some rad flush in and drove up the a180 doing 70 then had to pull over as the temp went into the red. soon as i had stopped it temp returned to normal
checked the res and it had spat some water out but there was enough to turn round and get me back. on the way back into town it did it some more but soon as i dipped the clutch the temp gauge returned to normal.

i have just flushed the entire system and hopefully it will sort it. still no heat through the vents as yet ...

Probably an air bubble in the heater matrix.

You need to get the engine up to temperature, either idle it for a very long time or drive it.

Once it is hot check the coolant level in the expansion tank. If it has dropped top it back up to the mark - take the usual precautions opening a hot cooling system.

Now run it at more than 2000 rpm for at least 60 seconds. Check the expansion tank again, top up is it drops.

Continue the cycle until the coolant does not drop.

Hi,

I have dropped the coolant this morning.

flushed the system again.

re filled with coolant and distilled water.

its gotten up to temp with the demister heater on in the cab.

still no heat . although the top and bottom pipes to the heater matrix are warm ?

That's what I was thinking

Also it's not advisable to add water to the cooling system, I use 5L of pink coolant/antifreeze. N

As Altransit says, are you sure the pump is working, is this a 2.4 or a 2.2.
2.2's can strip the water pump drive.

Did you raise the revs and hold them over 2000 rpm for at least 60 seconds ?
Did you try it more than once ?

Try driving it around and hold a low gear when accelerating to get over 3000 rpm.
If it suddenly overheats that is because the bubble has moved.

I still think you've got a bubble in the heater matrix.

The 2.2 and 2.4 hold 10 litres of coolant.

Its the 2.4lt

Had it held at 2.5k for over 1 minute a few times and the temp stays at normal temp

I've covered around 20 miles up and down the gears, in and around town and duel carriage way. Not over heated

Is there a way to bleed the matrix ? How do I remove the pipes to the matrix?

Thanks again for the replays

Hi guys . Just done a 150+ mile round trip. The heaters are still cold but the temp gauge didn't move off the normal running temp. Altho once parked up I noticed water/coolant on the ground and it had used/spilt the contense of the header tank.

Any ideas

Thanks

How much coolant on the ground ?

A long journey should get any bubbles trapped in the system blown round and into the header tank.
Any that don't get blown into the header tank should warm up and expand.
When it cools down the any bubbles left in the system shrink which drops the level in the header tank.

The heater hoses in the engine bay are, I think, fitted with quick release couplings, They definitely are if your air con equiped.
The couplings are black with two green 'buttons' on them. You push the connector gently towards the heater, push in the buttons and pull it back to release it.
The gentle push closed it needed because like the fuel system quick couplers they are prone to hooking on the locking ring.

If non air con and you don't have the quick couplers it will be a spring ring type hose clip

Spitting oil from where..?? You're oil cooler may have died...Do you have air-con..??

If you have air-con, does the vacuum operated heater tap on the heater hoses actually work..??
