MK 7 Transit. Sweet smell through vent/heater in cab

Postby tyasstark » Mon Apr 09, 2018 5:29 pm

Hi, I'm a new member long time lurker.

I have just recently replaced my heater blower in my no 7 transit.

I replaced it because it was slightly noisey but the main reason was there was a sweet smell coming from it. I thought it was the motor on the way out so decided to bite the bullet and replace it. (What a ball ache).

But it's not seemed to sort the problem. I did notice that the antifreeze header tank was low on water. So I topped it up.

I have been on a long run today and the problem is still there and the smell is defiantly the water in the radiator. So I have just been and bought the correct "red" antifreeze and will be doing a full flush tomorrow.

I guess my question is why is the smell so strong in the cab ?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards

Possibly the heater matrix itself is leaking, or a split pipe feeding the matrix

It is actually worse than the heater motor because you have to move the whole housing back from the bulkhead to remove the matrix.

Plus side is you know the rubber hoses are not leaking as they are in the engine bay.

Silly question, have you checked the heater intake duct from the bonnet to the bulkhead ?

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

A good thing to check is if you put your heaters on the windescreen after warming the van up to temp and check for slight misting of the windscreen. If your matrix is gone then when its full of hot water it will be coming out as steam which should settle on your screen when in use.

Hey. Heaters have been on most of the day and no steam or residue on the screen.

Ok so this morning on the way to work it started smoking from under near the exhaust. Mechanic says it a honeycomb unit on top of the gearbox ?
