Multiple clunking starter motor

Postby F111ORY » Mon Apr 16, 2018 9:16 pm

My van has developed a intermittent fault. Sometimes the starter motor will clunk like cars did years ago when you had a loose battery terminal. After 5 or 6 clunks it will start as normal. I have checked all the terminals and even applied a 300 amp test load to the battery cables on the starter.

One other thing is as the starter clunks all the dash lights flash in sync with the clunking. I'm thinking a relay somewhere? when the starter stops clunking and spins the engine over, the dash lights are on!

Take a live feed to the starter solenoid to bypass the ign to eliminate that, if it still does it, then its most likely the starter solenoid.
