Transit mk6 diesel smoke

Postby Stuart1989 » Tue Apr 17, 2018 12:43 pm

Transit mk6 2.4 di 90bhp 141k. Brought it as project to turn into beavertail but chuggs bit smoke on startup grey smoke burns your eyes. Rev it and it clears but leave it idlin tans slightly smokes again. Apparently had another pump fitted buy the person I brought off but I don’t believe that as he said these aren’t coded when they are. It had a spare pump in cab. It drives perfect no smoke and good power just on start up and idle. I thought maybe I injector gone leaking into bore but thought I’d ask for opinions before wasting money. No fault codes. Could it be the solenoids on pump or can anyone give me any ideas to check. Cheers Stuart

Does it only do it on a cold engine? N

Mainly yes. If driven doesn’t seem to smoke. Haven’t really driven it long enough and left as no mot on it. If started in workshop it will fill the workshop but if you rev it up the smoke clears. Leave it idling and slightly smokes on idle

Mines the same first start on a cold engine and it smokes for about 10 - 20 seconds, white smoke, smells of Diesel, white/grey smoke is unburnt fuel, I reckon it's due to lack of working glow plugs, once the engine is warm it should clear :D N

that smell is and smoke is pretty standard, especially for euro 3 engines.

as long as it does not smoke while driving it should be good.

Sorry for slow reply’s. work keeps me busy. The truck smokes a lot with diesel smoke enough to smoke out workshop until you give it a good rev for a minute or so then clears until it sits idling then diesel smoke again but not as bad as startup even if left to run for 20 mins. My pump is 0470004004 and I have got another with same number from a 80k engine. Can I take me edc off top of pump cut the wires and swap onto replacement pump. Failing that can snap on program the second hand pump. I have access to snap on solus ultra 15.2. Anyone know what engine code I have on truck 2002 02 plate

A plug in is the best idea mate

if po149 pops up its a timing fault

on these engines :D

Once I finish my recovery bed I’ll take it for a drive and plug it in. I reset it since I last plugged the solus into it but off top of head I think there was a timing code but reset and haven’t had it back yet so will take a drive it seems to drive fine tho and don’t notice smoke when driving just startup and idle. Doesn’t do it like that when ran for whole and left to idle only smells a little bit so don’t think will pass mot. I was wondering if pump was advancing too much on the solenoid so picked up a second hand pump and ordered tool to hold the sprocket. Have also ordered a tool to reset/ virginise ford pumps so if anyone needs one done when I get it I can help reset them for people. I’ll post some pics of my recovery bed later.

I could try changing the timing solenoid. The van had a spare fuel pump under the passenger seat when I brought it so could be worth taking the one off that and putting on the one in the truck before I fit the pump I just brought. If I’m to pull front of engine off to check timing I think I should do tensioners and chain. I see transitparts uk sell heavy duty kits but is it ok to use aftermarket timing chain kit

Hi,

With the heavy duty and MK7 timing kits we use OE chains + Tensioners. I hope this helps
