VP44 pump

Postby rotory » Wed Apr 18, 2018 11:08 pm

Gentlemen

Just doing some homework as it looks like I may need a new pump, getting white smoke and grey smoke when revving up.

Going to get the codes done again but several times the dreaded 1554 & 1664 have shown up previously. The van starts on the button .......just smokes.
Ant good recommendations for a VP44 supplier please.

Could just be duff wiring, electrics or timing solenoid on the pump..

Many thanks for your answer, I changed the timing solenoid last month following a knocking noise, didn’t make any difference. Wondering if I installed a dodgy solenoid. I’ve tried looking for a duff wire etc

a vp44 pump has the timing solenoid built in the pump

they are not like the vp30 :(

as the vp44 has a fuel advance piston inside it, apparently these can stick causing over fuelling or they dont start or they take for ever to start :(

Thank you Karl for the reply,
I did change the timing solenoid last month, no change. Tested the old one on 12v and it does click. The van did go through a period of difficult starting but now cleared and starts as soon as the key is turned.......but smokes, lots when revved.

Think the pump is not getting hammered enough as it’s a Motorhome and will probably have to be replaced. Going to conform the part number in the morning before ordering a refurb one

Many thanks

Thanks karl,
I have removed the original and found the part number 0470504040, they seem to be a bit sparce so looking everywhere. Found one on Ebay with dieseltechnology2011 so will give them a ring in the morning.

Hi rotory

I have the same van with similar problem. Diesel knock. I'd changed the timing solenoid. Still she knocks. Checked timing and they're all seemed to be in line.

Im interested to see if changing the pump will fix your problem!!

My error codes are p0149 p1564.

Ass from elbow Karl  Timing solenoid is at the bottom of pump and can be changed  Metering valve is in between pipe and requires a strip down :)

VP 44 metering solenoid can be remove with pump situ
from what i can see. Unlike vp30 which requires a special socket. Could a faulty metering soleniod causes diesel knock?

I’ve just changed the pump this week, I’m doing the glow plugs today then it’s time for a start up !At my wits end with this problem. It’s a Motorhome and we should be going on our summer holidays last week. I’ve changed everything that can be changed on the exterior of the engine.
Expecting lots of smoke on start up, but hoping it will clear

Well, I got 3 of the plugs out, 2nd cyl plug didn’t want to budge so I only replaced3.

Van starts on the button.........but still has white smoke !. I’ve run my cheap version of forscan and came up with numerous codes., photy attached. It has a new EGR and Fuel pump. Injectors serviced etc.
Should I replace the Filter again, it has a Ford one installed.

Did you clear all the codes after doing all the work??? Then take the van for a run and see what codes come back.

Hi knobby,

I cleared the codes on the Forscan, but the thing is still making smoke. After starting here is a slight hesitation but if I give it a rev up to 1500 it then stabilises at about 800 rpm, still smokes.
I shall get the lads from the local garage to pop along with their super duper code reader to clear the codes for me before I take it out on the road. Needs the front housing reinstalled first.
The way it smokes keeps nagging me as I spent numerous hours doing the timing, checking under rocker cover for damage etc.
I have a Ford filter installed but not convinced it’s perfect. The dealer told me there were at least 4 filters that could be installed !!. Would the wrong one cause slight hesitation ? Filter installed at the moment is P/n 1712933, 2c11-9176-AB
Many thanks for your time it’s much appreciated

Just had a thought, I did reuse the crank sensor. Could this be part of the fault ?
