Starter motor

Postby mnxtrany » Wed Apr 25, 2018 8:39 pm

07 10 17 put on new starter motor. 25 04 18 took it off as it was not engaging flywheel ring gear. Motor could spin but not engage. Didn't happen all the time. The last few weeks more frequently it did not engage.
Found the motor gear did not move, turn go back and forth. Found the motor gear and flywheel ring gear teeth worn. Found debri - metal chips, what looked like varnish/lacquer and some brownish hard material like rust in/around the inside of the motor gear.
Cleaned it scrapped it, used spray and diesel to wash it out. Now things moved. Refitted and it worked.

If the starter motor spins but does not engage the flywheel ring gear - remove the starter asap.

It's possible that you have a Dual Mass Flywheel, and it's breaking up :(

Do you know where to find out if the flywheel is DUAL MASS.

DMF SMF ake 18 Aug 2011. AKE
Dual Mass Flywheel - DMF
Single Mass Flywheel - SMF
MK 6 - Euro 3
2.0 FWD
75ps - SMF
85ps - SMF
100ps - DMF - if built before December 2001
100ps - SMF - if built after December 2001
125ps - DMF
2.4 RWD
All 2.4 have DMF
All the above can be converted to SMF using a Ford kit except the 135 ps TDCi
2.3 RWD Petrol/Bi Fuel
DMF
No conversion kit available
DMF - Its two pieces of heavy metal joined together with springs, to absorb vibration.
MK 7 - Euro 4
2.2 FWD
85ps - SMF
110ps - SMF
115ps - DMF
130ps - DMF
140ps - DMF
2.4 RWD
All 2.4 are DMF
3.2 RWD
All 3.2 are DMF
All 2.2 Euro 5 front and rear wheel drive are DMF

What are the benefits of changing to a smf?

Increased vibration, potential damage to gearbox input bearing, but hey you might save £50

So my transit van 2000 2.4 RWD 90ps has a DMF.
