Blown 90 Mk6 2.4rwd. can I use a 125?

Postby johnfixa11 » Thu Apr 26, 2018 5:30 pm

Been helped a lot by the posts on this forum...thanks to all of you that provide advice and links...Very long tale of woe, but to cut it short I have a 125 complete 2.4 engine, ECU and key chip. Can I fit it in neighbours dead 90 ? Both 5sp rwd, both 2004 Mk6. I have tried searching, but it is hard to get to the definitive answer...thanks in advance. (Links to definitive posts greatly appreciated!)

Thanks Ned. Sadly it is too confusing...I think those who know lots are quoting ALL possible problems. Which is understandable but makes me confused. my neighbours vehicles were same years, same Speedos. Hi top lwb, and chassis cab lwb. Sadly I didn't think about dash and looms until too late ...we were in a really busy yard (don't ask...those lads wouldn't even see my body as necessary to hide :-)) and after we test drove the donor I had to work around the oxy acet to get the computer out...and if our trailer wasn't there quick enough the engine and box would've joined the 15 metre mountain of them, that was part of a mountain range of metal. It takes about 17minutes to strip the engine and box that way :-)

So I am a reasonable mechanic, but not a lot of transit experience. Both are 2004 rwd mk 6. Original 12 month mot :-( is a 90 ...broken/skipped timing chain...at 76000m supposedly... 'donor' which we test drove is a 125, and we took the computer and a chipped key hoping not to have to swap pumps...and gain the power. And if you think that was long don't ask why he was buying the Mk6 when he owns a great Mk7 with a new timing chain, pump and freshly coded injectors...:-)

That's a lot of dead engines

Here what I know, the fuel pumps are programmed to the pcm (ecu) the 90ps uses a vp30 pump and the 125 uses a vp44 pump.

If you have the full 125ps engine, pcm and keys once installed you will have a 125ps van, as for the looms I have no idea N

Thanks...I can't wait to put the donor next to the deceased and if they have the same sensors and wiring I am going to swap the ECUs and chip...and pray I won't be grovelling to change the pumps on Sunday night. I will post the results.

Oh...there was also a 'something' on top of the 125 fuel filter. With an electrical plug...it looks like maybe a pump? Pulled the whole filter housing and 'thing'...as I am certain his 90 hasn't got that...

I think you will find the wiring is different between a vp30 and a 44 I’m sure iv tried to fit one for a customer who was adimant it would work and it didn’t I think I had to use his old pump and ecu in the end rather than swapping the loom over
just follow the onscreen instructions and it's fairly idiot proof...trouble is, we keep producing better idiots

Thanks wadey... I didn't notice a wire for the 'thing' on top of the fuel filter in the 90 loom (anyone know what it is?)...and I guess that alone might be the end of it. Good to hear pump swap is possible. Turbo and injectors will be ok ? Much easier to swap them on the floor. If I go that route I will take pics and post them.
Apparently the vw air cooled beetle had over a million changes to what looks like the same lump...Ford clearly took that figure as a challenge ;-)

Are the injectors the same then?

So I decided to go with the 90 pump, injectors and turbo...fate was kind and pretty much everything went as it should...HEAVY LUMP! The deceased 90 engine ( which did less than 30 miles from purchase of the temporary transit to keep business running while the mark 7 was repaired) had the classic cracked rocker beds...

The 90 and 125 injectors have different part nos...so I changed them too.

The only thing I am not sure about is the turbo adjustment...can anyone help? It fits on a straight swop, but takes a bit of a stretch to get it on...is there a setting?

Sure I will have a moan about bleeding tomorrow night :-)

Oh...and if anyone wants a mk6 125 kit (fuel filter with pump, pump, lines, manifold, injectors, turbo, ECU and key chip that was running sweet on Thursday send me a message...no reasonable offer refused. Sadly no Speedo or harnesses.

The valeo clutch which is about 20% worn max and a 5sp gearbox from a 2004 125 hitop van are also up for grabs.ImageImageImage

Your best putting the parts for sale in the for sale section, you'll get more response that way as not everybody ready all posts.
