Transit mk7 2.2 85bhp - black smoke under acceleration

Postby RustyPleco » Wed May 02, 2018 10:15 pm

Hello all,

Havr had my transit for just over a month now, ever since ive had it ive had black smoke when accelerating, its not a huge ammount, but defernatly noticable when looking in mirror, it also not a tiny ammount.

I have no service lights up, i average arround 400 miles to a tank of fuel, and can reach top speed of 80/90mph.

I have changed the air filter, fuel filter and blanked off the EGR valve (this did not throw a light)

Really unsure of whats gone wrong or what i should be looking for, any ideas would be muxh appriciated.

Thanks

How many miles on it..?? Might just need a session on IDS/Forscan to do the learns and possibly a PCM update....Injector leak-off test will give a fair idea of injector health.

You'll fail your next MOT from May 20th if your EGR is still blanked..!

Its 126k miles now.

I bought a modified elm cable and have forscan but was unsure what to do with the learns, do i do it?

Is there a order or anything i have to do before or after doing it?

Will get a leak of test done

Hi Rusty and Knobby,

After, well not really after, yet, more like during, a whole load of nonsense with my newer Mk7, I also just today noticed the same thing in my wing mirror - black smoke at times. I guess I should also follow your advice knobby? Does Vantuner do all those things?

Forscan is quite user friendly compared to IDS...

The Pump & injector "learns" are in the "service functions" section. Just follow the instructions on the screen...it's fairly idiot proof...trouble is we keep producing better idiots..

It's actually a pump, pilot, SCV, PRV and injector calibration procedure....no two pumps, injectors or valves are exactly the same, hence why Ford does the learns.... and as the parts wear they need to be re-calibrated to suit the engine. It's fairly normal for them to go slightly out of calibration over time, things eventually wear out and don't last forever. I do a set of learns on mine every 6 months or so to keep my van running as it should and this helps keep the fuel consumption to a reasonable amount.

The PCM holds the fuel system calibration information in memory and this won't change until a new set of learns are done...

They should be listed in basic order in Forscan, the system will let you know if an item cannot be done if you've missed a required item.....Usually the pump/pilot learn is done first....In some of the learns, it will say they only need doing if one of the components has been replaced etc...but I just do them all anyway. Some of the functions in the menu won't apply to all engine types etc....it you try to do one of these it will tell you if it can't be done.

There's also PRV "reset and/or opening value"....or something similar, in the menu items, it helps to reset these also so the system has a new PRV baseline to start from. Normally if you replace the PRV these need to be done anyway.

Just have a fumble around in the various menus etc... you can't hurt anything unless you go into the PCM programming menu...You'll need the Forscan "extended license" to do that though.

Thank you Knobby and Altransit,

I don't know if it's a Euro-V machine. It's 2007, 57 plate.......

I'm going to get in touch with Vantuner. I like to put my hand to most things, but I think this one will take me a week to do it myself!......

I spoke to Martin Vantuner today. He said some technical things. He said something about fuel pressure needing testing and recalibrating, and probably a coupla other things. Are all the things talked about here, and this fuel pressure thing, easily and reliably doable for an amateur? He quoted me £350 for what he would expect to do for my van. Rusty, this "injector learn" thing, is it complicated and time consuming? I can put my hand to most things, but if it takes a really long time and I am liable to make several mistakes, it might be better to just hand it over to Martin?
