transit overheating

hi all hope your well I'm new to this site I have just bought a cheap transit as a project the main issue is the temp gauge going to the red after about 5 mins of driving and it slows and down and shuts off when you open the bonnet don't even feel hot under there drives fine before temp gauge goes up any help would be great thanks

Check if all rad hoses are hot or warm, remove the thermostat and see if the water circulates. Could be a faulty sensor but could be faulty thermostat or blocked exhaust etc.

it's a 03 plate rwd 330 model found water on the dipstick so looking like head gasket

Any oil in coolant tank ? these have a oil cooler which are known to fail..
Head gaskets not so common.

hi don't no about oil in coolant tank as it won't fill up lol how would you no If oil cooler has failed cheers for any help pal

Disconnect the water pipes to oil cooler and join them together...

Or,has it been frozen during winter and pushed the core plugs out of head ?
