Diff reconditioning- DIY proposition?

Postby flashgordon » Fri May 18, 2018 5:16 pm

Hi All,

I have an '07 2.4 TDCi RWD 5 speed 100PS tipper with a whining axle which i gather is a common problem. There is a lot of play when I turn the propshaft by hand back and forth.

Is it possible to recondition it myself as I have a workshop with basic tools and a lift ? IIRC are special tools required to set clearances etc ? The existing 5.88:1 crownwheel and pinion needs to be changed anyway as it's unbearable !!

Been quoted £440 for the job...so your opinions would be appreciated.

TIA.

Hi All,

Also, does the different ratio of the final drive need to be programmed to the ECU ?

Is the speedo mechanically driven from the gearbox ? If so, does it need different drive gears too ? !!

TIA

Yes

No

You need a way of spreading the axle casing to get the crown wheel cage out and back in.
And you need the reference info to set the shimming of the pinion and cage to get the backlash right.

Thanks.

Are there any links to threads or videos showing the how it's done ? There are a few generic vids on YT but none are mk7 Transit specific.

And could any garage reprogramme it ?

Cheers.

I think the speedo takes its feed from the abs wheel sensor on the mk7

The diff only needs programmed in to the ecu if you are changing the output,if you are only rebuilding with new bearings ,seals and setting up the backlash of the crown wheel and pinion no programming is necessary

Thanks for all the info everyone !!

I got the quote as mentioned earlier but was looking to save a few quid by reconditioning the diff myself and changing the final drive ratio at the same time. I would not increase the engine output so therefore I assume that no programming would be necessary.

Looking at the price of the parts to do what I am planning ..it's not worth the risk of me doing it wrong

You will have to programme if you change the ratio ,won't if just rebuilding

And beware of idiots who repair it and say yes that's mint that (but it is whining).
No they don't whine normally despite what they say!

Obviously if you aren't paying much then expect a slight improvement.
