mk7, fwd vs rwd for carrying weight

Postby knighty1981 » Mon May 21, 2018 5:55 pm

running a few mk7 lwb high top vans right now

one is pretty rough, could do with replacing it...

I was thinking of looking for a few drive van instead, lower floor and extra height would be a help to us

we run fully loaded all the time

I was asking around about the FWD vans and two different people told me they're too gutless for the weight I run

I figured 115ps is the same if it's fwd or rwd (guessing gear ratios are about the same?)

when I passed my test we used to use those big/long talbot/citron/peugeot vans (can't remember the model names) - (had to use them because the transits kept getting nicked) - they were all fwd and were good with the weight on

used to run heavy in those days... I can remember once van once you were loaded you couldn't close the back doors because the van would twist and they didn't line up anymore :-o

any input/ideas anyone?

I don't want the vans to be fast, fast van just means the driver will kill them... but at the same time need to keep up with traffic when you're fully loaded :-)

This will open the usual can of worms between the two factions, but if the vans are the same configuration, have the same carrying capacity, and the same power engine, then there won't really be any difference in performance, except that the FWD will be slightly lighter, so can carry a few kilos more load, and will be a little bigger inside

The RWD boys will complain that you can't drift in a FWD, but then I always prefer the van to follow where you point the front wheels :P

honestly.... I always thought I'd need RWD to handle well with weight on

until I remembered those old talbot vans

I'll keep an eye out for a lwb high top mk7 then

thanks guys :-)

EDIT: quick check... are the fwd and rwd the same in that the 115ps and over are 6speed?
