MK7 2.4 Cuts out at junction.

Postby twin--turbo » Wed Jun 13, 2018 9:32 pm

My "new to me" 2.4 seems to have a habit of cutting out at junctions.

102K on the clock

I will come to a stop, and usually it will sit for 4-5 seconds with a light rhythmic flutter and then just as you want to go it quits. it does not do it at every junction, mostly restarts fine.

No ECU light ( unless someone has done a bodge trick ) will have to get my elcheapo scanner out to be sure.

Otherwise pulls really well. Starts in the morning perfect

I have read a few things but wanted to seek opinion before offering my thoughts (other than the fact I am cursed when it comes to Diesel)

Not read the codes yet, will try tonight.

Am I correct in that if there are no codes it points more towards the SCV?

I have ordered a forscan cable ( To go with my Mangoose, Ancient-OBD2, BMW, Bluetooth327, VAG-COM, etc, etc pile of leads!) . Where does one navigate to find the pump learn, or is it linked from the DTCs?

Cheers

Any other reliable source of the parts other than Ford?

Cheers

No fault codes according to Torque, does not get fuel pressure data but I think fairly normal from my experience on other vehicles.

I wouldn't really trust torque for reading codes but it definitely reads rail pressure. I've got a cheap Bluetooth elm and it works fine on my 2010 mk7 2.4
Are you using the trial or paid version?

Works on everything else I have ever tried for codes including my galaxy, gets the accelerometer data.

I have another reader but no batteries to put in it LOL...

I've been dealing with pressure issues for a while now and I don't think (though I might be completely wrong) it'll throw any codes unless the PRV goes.

You do need to be able to monitor the rail pressure though.
According to Ford's workshop manual if you are in 2do gear @ 800rpm and floor it you should see the FRP climb from 230 bar to 1600 bar as the rpm increase. If it doesn't go past 500bar then the PRV is gone.

I bet your PRV is fine and it's just the SCV that's playing up. You'll probably see the pressure dropping while idling (or trying to) and going up and down until it finally stalls.

You'll need Forscan to do the pump learn after you replace it.

My cheap hand held scanner also shows no codes or MIL but gets some live data.

She drove home ok from the office today. Cable on its way so will do a better scan once here.

My history with derv is poor.

IN- 2006 (M Plate ) 405 STDT, would not pass basic emissions even 12 years ago! owned it 3 weeks. (never go oil fired again!)
In- 2012 (52 plate ) Mondeo TDCI , 2 Injectors, Inlet presure valve, and the DMF failed in 8 months....
In-2014 (P reg ) Passat 1.9 TDI ( utterly bloody reliable, quote from garage "If all diesels were like this we would be out of business") had to go though.
in-2014 (54 Plate) BMW E61 530, Blocked DPF, Dodgy Injector, EGR stuck, £1k fixes in the first 3 days of ownership!
in-2018 (56 Plate) Transit.... God knows!!!!

Ouch!

She'll be fine, you'll see. If it is the SCV just make sure you get a decent one (ford or denso).

And since you'll have to remove it to replace the SCV you might as well give the inlet manifold a good clean. Chances are it will be full of crap, courtesy of the egr.

Fordcan arrived today, poped out with the laptop ( Running on linux ;) ) and got connected up

P037D - Active code

These I think were old codes, they may relate to the issue but may not.

P068A PCM Power Relay de-energised ( perhaps the power relay is shutting off? ---- Seen that related to the SVC
P062B (Internal control module fuel injector control performance) could be SVC I guess.
P2265 Water in Fuel Sensor Circuit Range

Cleared the lot and only P037D came back initially although have not driven yet.
Got a 30 mile trip tonight so will re-read the codes ( hopefully without it cutting out) and then see if it cuts out before the weekend and read the codes again.

Found PUMP LEARN function so hopefully we will have a solution and I can start thinking about the noisy gearbox again!.
