2011 2.4 4x4 Transit Gearbox Noise

Postby GHXST » Thu Jun 14, 2018 10:35 am

I have recently bought a 2011 2.4 4x4 high roof Transit, it's on just over 100k.
I am having concerns about the noise I can hear from the gearbox. It 'rattles' quite loudly at idle. The sound goes away when the clutch is depressed or I add a little bit of RPM. There is also a band of noise when driving at around 1750rpm, before than and after the van is very quiet and all the gears select fine. It had a new clutch and flywheel at 80k too.

This video shows the sound at idle with the clutch down, clutch up and when adding a little bit of RPM.

It appears to be coming from the gearbox when under the van, but I'm at a bit of a loss with it at the moment. Has anyone had a similar sound at all?

Cheers!

The 4x4 is quite rare so not many of us have them...if the noise goes away when clutch is depressed....it's definitely the box.

What clutch was fitted and, might sound silly but, why?
That sounds very similar to mine on idle it's rattley but as soon as you push clutch so the release bearing has pressure on the clutch (not even fully depressed) noise goes away.

I'm putting mine down to the clutch but not sure what's fitted as it has had a clutch before but could be either SMF or DMF I suspect DMF but it could be anything.

The clutch was done before my ownership by the original lease company, so id imagine they wouldn't single-mass convert it and just replace. It doesn't state if the dual-mass was changed with the clutch which lead me to thing DMF too, I took it to a garage an they seem convinced its within the box though but don't want to touch it because it's the 4x4.
