Can I just loop the two pipes together with a bit of 15 or 22mm copper tube with jubilee clips.

That will let you read codes yourself via laptop or phone.
Other than that:
Pressure test on coolant system see if it's pressure that's causing water loss then over heating or over heating causing water loss. It could even be a failing water pump not circulating properly or thermostat not opening properly.
Pressure test cold and watch for pressure drop/coolant external leak.
Pressure test running and watch if pressure rizes to blow coolant past cap. Sent from my anu5 using crapatalk
