Stuck by the sea

Postby howdeedoodee » Sat Jun 16, 2018 11:29 pm

Hi chaps and chapeses

I have driven down to Exmouth, Devon from Nottingham(approx 250 miles from home) to rough it in the back of my transit mk7 long wheelbase for a few days to go jetsking, windsurfing and kite surfing parking just 10 feet from the beach with other vans and campers
Got a Yamaha superjet in the back and all my other water sports gear.
I flew down the motorways with no problems until I reached within 5 miles of the beach and suddenly the temperature shot up and van went into limp mode.
I opened the cap slowly and let all the pressure out then topped back up with water and left the cap loose.
When putting my palm of hand over the filler I don't seem to get any pressure backing up (head gasket?) it's running
Fine but if you turn it off and sit for 10 minutes then restart it it runs rough for a few seconds then white smoke comes out the exhaust, then I rev it and it clears and seems to run ok.
Its losing most of a topped up coolant tank when driving around Exmouth area so i keep topping it up.
I've parked up for the night now and sleeping in the back but and screw the van I'm going out on the sea on the superjet as soon as the sun rises.
Please can anyone help and tell me what to check once my fun is over and the dread hits later on in the day coz I got to deal with the van.
I can stay at the beach for up to a week to hopefully sort it but don't want to risk another 250 home until it's done.
I'm close to euro car parts for supplies.
I'm a DIY mechanic of sorts and have changed gearboxes on car plus clutches, water pumps, brakes, driveshafts, etc,etc but not too sure about the coolant system coz doesn't it cool EGR as well.
Sorry for spelling mistakes as I'm laying in back of van squinting coz I forgot me reading glasses.
Regards
John

Egr cooler and oil cooler are far more common failures than headgaskets on these,

I won't be able to reply until morning coz me phone battery is on 2% and I don't fancy climbing out the van in my skiddies to the front of van to charge up as there's a pub opposites with a load of birds and blokes outside.
I'll be back on the post when the sun rises though.
Cheers

The water cooled EGR would be my bet. Suspecting and assuming it's a RWD the EGR is (looking into the engine bay from the front) down to the right rear of the engine. I shouldn't be too hard to spot if it's water cooled (pipes on either side of the body of It),
Quickest and simplest way to check if it's at fault is to remove pipes and either blank or join hoses.
If there's a crack in the EGR then it could let coolant out into exhaust as it's running and lack of pressure in system coupled with Loss of coolant will help to cause overheating.
As mentioned head gaskets are not a common problem but not impossible.
If your just losing water but not getting oil in the coolant then oil cooler can be ruled out.
Good luck and enjoy the surf.

+1 for the EGR cooler...does she blow a lot of steam out the exhaust??...Does it smell sweet?? Just by-pass it and be on your way, replace it when you get a chance.

Thanks for this
Is the egr valve and get valve cooler separate components coz I've seen what I think is a egr valve with integrated cooler and one with cooler on its own.

No point stripping and cleaning if it's passing water as the body will be cracked.
Leave it till yer home and strip off the inlet manifold at the same time for cleaning but it's a minging black job not side of the road stuff.

Just bypass to get you home will not cause any problems. Some vans don't have water cooled EGR anyway so it doesn't have to have it.

Do you block off both pipes in and out of cooler.
I read somewhere two sockets and jubilee clips.
Is it best accessed from underneath.
Is it a combined age valve and cooler or just cooler
Anyone got a picture of it/location
Thanks
