buying used vans

Postby garnhamr » Sun Jun 17, 2018 4:01 pm

looking through the vans on ebay i noticed a few that look like they've been tarted up with fresh ply lining, steering wheel cover etc and also very low mileage that makes me suspicious.
I wonder how easy it is for someone in the motor trading industry to alter the mot history and mileage records? And i wonder what the best way to check if it's genuine is? Any ideas?

Easy to adjust the speedo, the vans don't wear too well imo so if it has been clocked substantially then you'll know, or its had a hard life.
If I got in a van and it was rust free, shiny, tight to drive and nearly no visible wear and the engine was clean and runs smooth and the water was nice and pink etc then you told me it had 300k on it I'd say that's absolutely fine :-)

Anyway, take a look at it for yourself is my advice. Sellers and 99% lying bast*rds!! Yeah m8 it's mint absolutely solid you'll buy it 100% no probs......

Bit tricky to know the answer if they are far away tho :? :(

Mileage on the van can be changed simple by changing the speedo.

Changing the mot history would be pretty hard! You’d need some one on the inside at the dvla etc.
Unless you were some kind of a highly organised crime lord, I can’t see that happening.

You’d needed to have altered the speedo before each mot over the years? Hardly worth it for a few hundred quid?

bodywork needs some tlc on that one. I bet the engines tip top tho

That's the key though isn't it really. Have to have a good look at them.

Has transit custom wheels on and looks sandy on the drivers carpet.
If the prv and scv aren't listed in any service history them that'll be 300+ on top of the purchase price straight away :(

8k I'd be looking at a mk8 or custom tbh.

I just traded my van in for 4K and it’s the same van but blue.

In fact that’s a billy basic spec!
I say that’s a 3.5k van now :D

it's done only 67000 miles though and from what i can see, the paint work is free from rust and in good nick. I was tempted to suggest 6500 and accept 7. Once i've had a look and seen there's no funny business going on ofcourse...

No danger that’s worth more than 4k.

Mileage or not, it’s a basic spec transit with metallic paint!
