Click, click, click, then ignition.

Postby Karst » Tue Jun 19, 2018 7:35 pm

Hi Extremely Helpful Folks,

Before I've even addressed the first things I was aiming for, I'm getting an intermittent thing at startup. On average, when I ignite the engine, it goes "click, click, click", (and sometimes, "click"), and then starts. Once there must have been a loss of power because the clock on the radio reset itself.

Is there a quick easy answer to this?

Or should I just wait till something actually breaks and then react?

Have you checked the battery?
Do you have 1or2 batteries?
My mk6 done this and all it was, was a corroded terminal at the starter motor, once cleaned up, it was perfect again.

I've just got 1 battery. The connections to the battery should be fine as I've recently dealt with them, but I'll check them again. And I'll check the other terminals too.

Thank you!

Ok Folks,

I just took the van in for a service, and found out it needed nearly 2 grand's worth of work doing to it. Just got the priorities done for now.

And I forgot to ask him about the clicking at ignition (I was hoping he could clean up the contacts while he was at it).

I have had a look for the starter motor contacts, but I am stumped.

Please can anyone tell me where they are? Maybe you have a photo.

I'm sure this id such a newby question. I couldn't even find a straightforward guide online. I don't normally just ask a stupid question without making some effort. I am just so time-starved for the time being!!!!

Starter motor contacts?
do you mean starter motor terminals? or ignition switch starter contacts?

Starter motor terminals are on the starter, and I would leave the ignition switch alone if you don't know what you're doing and just fit a new one if its needed.

Hi Chug,

I think I mean the terminals then in that case.

I mean, I look down into the engine, and I see things. I think one is the alternator. But I haven't identified the starter motor, or its terminals. Do I need to get under the engine? Are they accessible from the right hand side, facing the engine?

I'm going by what Punto said about cleaning the terminals.....

I get this on my 2.2 - if i stick my foot on the throttle whilst turning it over it starts - if not i just get clicks!!

If i have done a decent run then I dont get click and it just starts. If the van has sat for a day or 2 or has just be used around town it get more clicks

Its had a new battery but admittedly it was just a cheap one!

Hi Matt,

I haven't yet stuck my head under the engine to look for the starter motor terminals. I actually still don't know where they are.

At a recent service they told me 2 of the cells in my battery are dead, could that have something to do with it?

At the same time as this clicking it often cuts power to the radio to the extent that it resets the clock to 00:00/

Oh boy, it's hot

So there you go, it's the battery needs replacing.

Is it really that simple? Is it possible to explain why that causes the clicking??

Yep as simple as that, new battery will sort it. As for the clicks I presume it's the starter motor solenoid clicking but there's not enough power to spin the motor

Oh bugger! That doesn't sound like it'll be doing the solenoid any much good! That'll save me scrabbling around under the van for at least one reason.

Any special recommendations for a battery for a Mk7 Transit 2007, Duratorq TDCI 2.2 (85PS) ?

Have a look on www.eurocarparts.com put in your registration and it will give you a few options for your van. It will either be a 100 or a 110 type and get whichever your budget allows.

Euros normal have discount codes on their website for 35% off

https://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/bosch-s5010.html#productCollateralTabs1

The only difference I can see between the two, except the huge chasm in the prices, is that the "hold down" of the first one is B3 and of the second one is B13.... Just a typo?

According to Europarts this is right for my van. According to the Amazon search it's not. I'm falling asleep - but I regard this as urgent now.
