Apologies, I must have mistaken your high handed attitude for something else.

You may be 'well aware' of the reasons and operation of viscous fans, but my post was in answer to those imediately above.

You mentioned that people remove them from the clanky old 200 and 300 motors, a design some 10-15 years previous to the Duratorq engine. This would only be relavent if the fan and operating conditions are the same.

In answer to the original question, yes I have, briefly. It was winter, the fluid coupling had failed, and the noise and cooler running heater was enough for me to risk it.

Hi Jim, apology accepted.

Generally 200 and 300tdi are not clanking in my opinion unless they have not been well maintained. I think it comes down to more variables than just the fan and conditions are the same. For instance, for an exact equation on whether it is viable to remove the fan you would also need to consider things like the strength of the coolant pump, the coolant to water ratio mix, surface area of the radiator, etc.

Thank you for answering my original question though.
Everything is literal to me. If you do not like it that is your problem.

I have no time for idiocy or rudeness.

The important criteria is heat transfer, all the coolant flow through a massive rad counts for bugger all if the flow stagnates in the castings and causes hotspots and localised boiling.
