"Best" engine oil (additive)...?

Postby Karst » Thu Jun 21, 2018 8:29 am

Hi Folks,

I've tried doing a search for "best engine oil" but the search software does not like it.

I know there's a lot of opinions about engine oil. Some say they are all the same, others say this oil or that additive is best. The last engine oil I used was Bardahl after being convinced of its merits (apparently it is (one of?) the only truly fully synthetic oils on the market. The others labelled "fully synthetic" are not, the courts ruled that description was not a statement of content, but a name only for the oil. Wonder who got a backhander there?)

Any offers on the "best" oil for a 2007 Mk7 Transit?

Any offers on the best oil + additive? How about Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabiliser?

Put any old shite in as long as you change it regularly the van will rot away before the engine is run in :D

I mean technically speaking, anything which gives the oil the capacity to stick to the cylinder walls for the longest time will result in the least engine wear, right?

That's why I used to use Castrol Magnatec for diesels. I know it's not magnetic, but the additives in the oil would make it stick and it would hopefully still be up the insides of the cylinders at the next start up.

Isn't it?

Not sure but I think that fords oil is magnatec .I worked fo one of England’s major bus companies and they ran the engines on some cheap oil and the engines all did well over 500,000 miles but every bus on the fleet had a oil and filter every 3 months no matter what miles they did

I strongly agree. Constant replacement is the key.

I did a combined half-a-million miles in my last 2 vans (one of which was a Transit) run on whatever oil they used to have in a barrel at the dodgy garage I used.

No problems with engine wear to report, infact the Sprinter engine still pulled like a train at 310k when I sold it.

Just change the oil either at the scheduled interval or before and you'll be fine.
