Can you set up a central locking button on dash for MK7?

Postby XR8Chic » Fri Jun 22, 2018 12:46 am

Hi, I have a 2008 MK7 transit and the central locking hasn’t worked for years ( posted about it years ago)
I have just climbed over the seats to get in the back and just accepted it as how I do things in this car.

I recently lent my van to a friend and explained how to get in the back. Problem was neither her or her family could fit over the seat. She ended up getting a neighbours child to climb over to open it.

I was wondering if it’s possoble to put a button on the dash for the doors like most other cars? Would make life so much easier.

It is possible to fit a button, but doing that is just far more hassle (and expense) than actually getting your central locking fixed - which could be something as simple as a fuse or the rear door loom.

If your central locking isnt working now, then you'd have to get it fixed before fitting a button to operate it anyway.

See a mechanic.

Have you checked fuse F78?

A switch can be added but it needs to be controlling a switching relay as the locks reverse the power for locking/unlocking but the servo motors in the locks are always connected to earth so to energise one way you need to interrupt the earth and then supply power to the circuit required.
Maybe easier getting to the bottom of your fault than trying to set up something else?

How do you currently lock or unlock all the doors when you park up?

Do you hear the doors locking when you start to drive?

Like I said, far more complex and expensive than just having the central locking fixed.

It's not actually that complicated it just sounds it. I've fitted one in the past to do exactly this kind of thing hence how I know what's required
Where it becomes complicated is, if there is something fundamentaly wrong with the system which is stopping it from working in the first place. Fix that and it may start to do what you want it to do, or add a switch once you know what's going on.

If you have 2 batteries under drivers seat, the front battery charges your key for central locking and maybe flat or knackered. Holds just enough charge so the radio doesn't lose code but c/l doesn't work.
