Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement

Postby Tcollings » Sat Jun 23, 2018 10:49 am

Hi Guys,

I've got a mk6 75psi Duratorq engine -150k on the clock. I've had a host of problems but more recently heard a bit of chain rattle when cranking the engine and so think its probably wise to change the tensioner asap. Do I need to change the whole lot, i.e. chain, sprockets, tensioner and guides, or can I get away with just changing the tensioner and guides. I'm a poor student so if I can avoid changing the whole lot that would be ideal. Sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks,

Tom

Taking in account that it is a bit of a job I would say might as well change the lot and have peace of mind .
Once the cover is off it is easy to change things . Getting the cover off is the time consuming job .

I suggest you change the tensioner (if it is truly faulty), the guides and the chain only. The sprockets are hardly faulty.
