12v charger under dash - Always on?

Postby LOMAX » Sun Jul 15, 2018 6:41 pm

I want to charge my phone even when the engine is off but the 12v socket switches off when I turn the engine off.

How do I make it stay in? I know it's possible as van at work does this but not sure how to do it myself.

Cheers

Well, just to be different, mine is "always on" except when it turns off. Not being a smart axx, that's just what happens. Manual is very obtuse, it's on when the ignition is on and maybe off when the switch is off. IDK but guess this means there are differences vehicle to vehicle.

Get someone with IDS to check the battery saver time most put the electrics to sleep after 1/2 hour which cuts power to auxiliaries that don't need power when the key is at pos 0 but that can still draw power .I came across a pick up tipper that the time was set low to stop the tipper operating ,would have been easier to wire it correctly than mess about with vehicle configuration

IDS is the ford diagnostics system.

Is this a mk6 or a mk7

Mk7 with twin batteries have live power sockets. At least mine stay live, very useful for powering the cool box.
Plus there are fused power options in the battery junction box.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Mk7. But it is a welfare unit so I think the batteries have been moved to the back which might explain why this socket is no longer live.

Could I rewire the socket to one of the fused power options you mention?

It may have had it's feed modified, or maybe mine is the oddball.

Power to the 12V power points comes from the batteries through fuse F5 in the battery junction box, it's a 100A fuse.

From there it goes to the auxiliary junction box, that's the one in front of the bcm, first one behind the glove box.
Fuse F45 powers the socket in the dash storage.
Fuse F47 powers the lighter socket.
Fuse F49 powers the rear socket, usually in the right rear door pillar.
All are 20 amp.

No relays are shown interrupting the circuits.

The connector on the back of the socket is normally orange.

Same here thought it was just mine and there is defo no 30min timer after the ignition is switched off as I came out the following morning and the dash cam was still on recording
