MK6 gearbox on MK7 RWD

Postby twin--turbo » Mon Jul 16, 2018 7:22 pm

I am struggling to find a reasonably priced 5SPD MK7 locally, but there are quite a few MK6's

I can't find a definitive answer on the subject of swapping the selector housing over, I read something about having to modify the selector rod but no details, and othe people saying its a straight swap?? searched many thread on dash swap but not got the answer?

Anybody actually done a MK7 cable upgrade?

I think you'll fing the tailshaft coupling on the gearbox may be different too.

The biggest issue is the Mk6 gear lever goes though the floor, Mk7 has cables from the dash. There are some who have fitted a Mk7 dash to their Mk6 but I don't know what they did about the big hole in the floor.

Paul2012 has found the part no for the plate to cover a mk6 hole in the floor when doing his conversions but not sure if he was changing the gearbox as well or just fitting the linkage. If anyone would have the definitive answer I reckon it's be his good self?

Mk 6 box will fit a mk 7 but you will need to change the selector rail and its stripdown to replace .About an hours work if you have the correct tools. You need the three bolt rear flange box :)

I don't have a MK6. It's a MK7

It's just the MK7 5SP gearbox seems to be rare in comparison to the MK6.

I know the selector housing will bolt up but it's this question on the selector shaft that I keep coming back to and cant find an answer on what needs doing or how to go about it.

What's the difference, I have read one post where it says a (groove/slot can be ground in). What special tools, does the rear casing come off after removing the output flange, or does the front casing need to come off too?

I have read lots of threads, but all the vital details are missing in order to evaluate the procedure.
