Rear wheel bearings

Postby WarthogARJ » Mon Jul 16, 2018 9:06 pm

Does anyone change the bearings on Mk6 rear wheels (that are fwd)?
My hub assembly came off surprisingly easy, although there was a lot of rust in general.

And in fact i can re-use the brake drum: it’s at the “new” limit.
It was worn, there’s a lip, but very uniformly, and it must have been thicker than the “new” diameter to start with.

And in fact the hub could be re-used, but i think i’d want to replace the bearings. One seems a little loose and there was a bit of corrosion on one part.

But although i can get them out, with some bashing and a dremmel, i suspect it might be hard to install new ones. There’s some funny press fit lock rings that look tricky to put in when new, and i only got the roller bearing out by letting some of the rollers fall out. Dunno how easy it would be to get a new one in.

A new hub with bearings installed and new axle nuts is £79. And a set of bearings without the axle nuts is £40, for bearings that might not be so good.

So i suspect nobody actually replaces bearings? If so, is there a trick to it?
I think I’ll still get the assembled set, but i’d like to know how to do it anyways.

Fwd rear wheel bearings are a sealed unit that incoropate the wheel hub (wheel studs) and slide on the stub axle fairly easy, they are held on with the hub nut (that's bloody tight) then the drum fits over that, I have changed mine when they started growling. N

Yes thanks, and that’s what i have bought.
But in fact it’s not a “sealed” unit, the bearings do come out without any damage to the bearing hub.

And you can buy bearings on their own: for about £20.

My question was how easy is it to fit them in?

The bearing assembly has two types of bearing: a thrust bearing that comes off and goes in very easily.
Is held in place by a sort of internal circlip.

The 2nd bearing is a rotational bearing that is the bugger to put in i suspect.
Unless you know the trick perhaps.
It is held in place by two oversized rings that you could slide in sideways then turn into place.

What does seem tricky is to install the actual bearing itself.

At first look it seems a bigger OD by quite a bit than either opening....
Is not a case of a press fit, there must be a trick.

Maybe you take it apart and place the three parts in at a time?
Like the top seal, then the rollers in their cage, then the bottom seal.
I dunno.

Is like a puzzle, and i like puzzles.
But maybe not enough to spend £20 on a bearing to see if i can fit it into my old assemblies....

I asked a supplier on eBay who sells them if he has details and he said no.
He just sells them.....
