Turbo adjustment advice

Postby chris72a » Tue Jul 17, 2018 4:55 pm

Hi All, after getting my ECU remapped by vantuner (awesome BTW) Martyn gave me some tips on adjusting the waste gate on the turbo instructions below. I don't have a boost guage and haven't been able to borrow one, is it possible to adjust the nut say a half turn at a time and see what results I get and how would I know if I have it at optimum without the boost guage. Just thought someone may have done this and just tell me to turn it 2 times and that's it..

Cheers
Chris.

Great, you need a base reading at idle, which is either 0 or atmospheric pressure ( just make a note of that figure for now ) then " full load " which is higher gear and full throttle up hill , before max rpm is reached.

full load should be 800mbar ish higher than base reading, then adjust till its about 200 mbar higher, at between 1 to 200 higher you'll find a sweet spot

In the UK the adjustable bit rusts. Get under and look up at the turbo and you'll see a rod between wastegate pot and the turbine housing , you need to loosen the 10mm lock nut and effectively shorten the rod, its best done 1st time off the vehicle, then once loose and lubed you can adjust on the vehicle.

An alternative is to fit a "sytec in car boost controller" specifically that model. That unit fits on the little pipe between compressor housing and waste gate pot.

Either way you'll need a boost gauge or a diag tool that can read live boost :)

Boost gauges can be bought for about 10 sovs or 1m $au  think my boost gauge was about £8 plus the extra pipe for £2 (windscreen washer pipe is the perfect fit  ) I would advise getting a boost gauge before fiddling with the turbo, I have adjusted my turbo and can see up to 28psi boost :D N

I was a bit less scientific than that with my Mk6 125. After Martyn had done his thing I just kept adjusting a turn at a time til it put the EML on when given the hoof, then backed it off 1/2 turn.

Showed just under 1.4Bar on my cheapo e**y gauge, up from 1Bar before.

It would regularly split the inlet manifold though, ended up fully plastic welding one to cure it.

Thanks Ned and Jim, so if I get a boost guage do I need to convert from PSI to mBar, Martyns email says 800mBar but the boost guages are in PSI.

Cheers
