Which wires for custom amplifier

Postby Kriegar » Tue Jul 17, 2018 7:05 pm

So Im trying to hook up an aftermarket amp to my mk6 and have ripped out the old radio.

So far when I hook it up and switch the ignition on it just heats up... so clearly Im connecting the damn thing up wrong.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to which color wires I should be using?

What stereo and what amp?
Please post a pic of your amp connections. And alything else you think might be relevant.
Its pretty simple wiring an amp up I'm sure when we've seen it whatever is wrong will be easily spotted.

Unless your amp is fooked.

From left to right:
GND = wire to van body close to the amp
REM = connect to blue wire from back of stereo or an ignition live wire from anywhere else, this turns the amp on when when it receieves power (provided everthing else is connected correctly)
+12v = +12v from battery (with an inline fuse rated at 25a)
For the GND and +12v connections you must use a good guage of cable as this is where the power is. If you dont have cable for 30a or more then dont wire it up, it could easily burn your cables if you use lower rated cable.

Speaker connections should be self explanitory.

Right no same as before.

I have been connecting the 12v+ to the orange/black wire, the ground wire to one of the green/black wires and then the remote wire to the yellow/blue wire.

It may not help that they are speaker wires that im using to bridge the wires, but I have been doubling them up to avoid them burning out until I get some proper wire.

What I found odd is that its the ground wire that's heating up, whether or not I connect it to the ground wire on the stereo or the chassis of the van.

The amp also also heats up so im wondering if I have borked it!

Any suggestions?

No one does wiring by wire colour. I presume you dont have a meter and you're guessing what these wires are?

What are the wires you mention and what do they supply?

If they are part of the original vehicle loom then don't wire an amp to them because you'll almost certainly burn them out. You could also cause serious damage to the vehicle loom, killing your van. Do not use doubled up speaker wire as electricity will not use both wires effectively, it will start to burn the shortest one. Also an amp should never be grounded back through the stereo loom, thats absolute madness. If you read what I wrote above I said to take it to the van body as near to the amp as possible, meaning use the shortest run of suitable wire to a nice earth point.

If you take an "I can do it" attitude to something you're not sure of then you'll come a cropper.

Any wiring for power for an amp should be totally new, be comprised of the correct wire and fuse and not use any part of the original vehicle loom.

Ah right fair enough. I had read online which wire does what and read that you can get wiring harnesses to connect the original stereo wires to an aftermarket amp or just cut the wires (which I have done).

I am taking the van in to get new tires tomorrow so will speak to the mechanic about it and see if they can help. I did try grounding to the van and taking the power from the +12v off the battery but will try it again if the garage can't help.

I didn't think it would be so complicated just to get power to the damn thing!

I have tried wiring this to the battery like you suggested and still nothing :/

Im wondering if the amp is just not working.

I even tried connecting the negative terminal to the remote connection and still nothing.

I have a new el cheapo amp too so will have to give that a bash too and that should highlight if its my fault or the amp.

Why would you do that? Thats never going to work. There's no wonder its not working and If you continue to touch wires on connections just to see if they work then your almost certainly going to damage something soon, thats if you havent already.

Here is how to wire it again. If it you wire it up as I've said (not swapping the connections round or doing it however you think) it wil work, if it isnt already fooked.

The remote connection needs wiring to battery positive.
The 12v+ to battery positive
GND to battery negative.

If you can wire it up like that and still nothing then bin it.

Have you checked the fuses on the amp?

I think you should just leave it alone, clearly you do not have the skill set for this.
