Help needed quick -gearbox removal problems

Postby flashgordon » Sat Jul 21, 2018 5:12 pm

Hi All

I'm in the process of removing the 5 speed box from my mk7 RWD 2.4 tdci to sort out the stiff selector unit. I've removed the box to engine bolts (seven one way and two the other) but the box won't come off. It's like it's stuck at the top somewhere. Any thoughts on how to remove it ?

Also, I loosened the gearbox subframe bolts but one of the nuts at the front is rusted on and the bolt is spinning, with the nut stuck on the bolt and there s no access to the head of the bolt inside the box section. Any thoughts ?

At the moment the truck is on a two post lift so access is not too bad !!

Be sure that all bolts are removed and maybe the starter or egr parts or anything that looks like it is obstructing.

The other bolt I'd it the wishbone bolt? The nut will be 24mm and you can get a socket and the socket bar inside the box section and it works fine.

There should be 8 bolts going in from the gearbox side  Left or right x member nut :?: Did you get the bolts through the wishbones out :?:

Thanks for the replies

I found the eighth bolt hiding at the top above the small heat deflector cover
I loosened the front bolts that hold the gearbox subframe to the front but I haven't removed the bolts that go through the wishbones yet. Looking at them they could be a problem. Due to rust on the nut / bolt heads, some of my metric sockets don't fit...I have to hammer on AF sockets !!

I assume that the steering rack will have to stay in position even if I remove the gearbox subframe completely ? Would be easier with it removed TBH.

Finally, I think that the allen bolt / pin holding the cast arm of the gearlinkage was too tight. I've loosened it off and retightened the grub screw. Everything else was pretty loose.

The allen bolt is normally covered by a bung so it looks like someone was there before .Loosen the grub screw and screw the bolt in and out while dousing in wd and see what happens  The bolt is never tightened fully home as the grub screw holds it in place

The cover of the allen bolt had been chiselled away so that they could adjust it...looks like they got it too tight..hopefully.
I'm hoping it's not the gearbox internals.

Regards.
