Buying advice please

Postby Puerto » Mon Jul 23, 2018 7:05 am

Hi everyone.

I’m currently in the market for another Transit. I’ve had a smiley face for years that finally gave up, and bought a custom a couple of years ago which is great.
My problem is I need a little more room, but I dont want to get rid of the custom as my wife uses it quite a lot and loves it, plus we quite like the fact that we’ve been able to use it as a make shift camper for the last couple of months. So that rules out trading it in for a new larger tranny.

So I’m looking at a cheapish Mk7 between 2 and 4 k to spend.

As you all know as this price range the years, mileage and condition is all over the place. I’ve seen a couple of 10/11 plate minters, with 175k, solid throughout but the engines breathes leak and has back pressure like a gudun, and I’ve seen older 57 and 58 plates with one owner from new, less than 90 genuine miles, but sills are needing welding up, which doesn’t bother me too much, but the hidden rust scares me.

I’ve seen a 11 plate with 116k, decent body, but it’s had lots done on the engine. New piston rings, big ends, skim etc etc... it drove ok but the work on the engine scares me also. Would such work likely to be a future problem? Or is it actually a good thing?

I’m no mechanic but with such low miles, it may suggest a bit of previous abuse?

Anyway guys, what do you recon to all of the above? Are any worth the risk or should I avoid and keep looking?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You're viewing the purchase of a well used van through rose tinted spectacles.
Anything thats done 116k will have had work done to it. Repair history/receipts are a good thing, if you want a sure thing then you'd have to buy a new one.
