Understanding difference in Turbos in different Transits

Postby Dave Poulter » Sun Aug 05, 2018 9:31 pm

My Mk 6 Transit looks to be coming to the end of its economical life and I'm looking around at a replacement.
I understand that some vans have different power turbos than others.

My current van is SWB 280 van and is pretty nippy, but the one I'm looking at although a turbo is meant to be quite slow. I'm told it only has a 75 turbo. What is the difference in terms of driving and can it be upgraded if needed and at what approx cost?

Also any advice for getting the best money for a spares or repair vehicle (though due to space it will need to be moved on quite quickly).

Thanks

Not sure about the mk8 vans but assuming your looking at moving to the mk7?
The difference in turbo's depends on what PS the engine is.
The simplest way to get more HP is getting a remap of the PCM (powertrain control module) which is an electronic way of getting more from your engine.
BUT the best thing to start with is a van that has a decent PS to start with.

As far as turbo's are concerned the lower ps vans are a mechanical waste gate control. The higher ps vans (above 115ps I think) are VNT turbo's which have an electronic unit which varies the vanes inside the turbo to adjust the boost pressure.
In modern electronicly controlled engines it's not quite as simple as whacking on a bigger turbo to give you more oomph since the engine management is not programmed to see more flow or pressure in the intake.

Hope this helps but would be useful to give more info on what van(s) your looking at to give better advice as there's lots of options out there

My shoes have more than 75ps without me in them.

Your looking at it the wrong way Dave, the power isnt so much down to the turbo itself its the engine map thats important. Most engines can be remapped to give more power, but why would you need to? Just buy a van with a higher ps. Just so you know 1ps is equivalent to 0.99bhp so the ps number is almost the same and the bhp for any given vehicle. When buying a van look it up on etis to see its ps number and that will give you a good idea of how powerful it is.

If I was looking at vans I'd be looking for something around 115ps and above then you wont need to worry about what turbo it has or getting it remapped.

Am I right in thinking that if you spoof a vehicle to higher spec with a remap - your insurance could be null and void unless you have advised them?

Another reason to just get one with a higher spec.

Nope - not an undercover agent (except under the sheets!).

Haven't you heard about insurance companies?

Happy to take your premium money.

Not happy in paying out and will find any excuse to wriggle out of doing so.

My remarks are just trying to help.

Nothing more, nothing less.
