Starting problems, 2.0 mk6

Postby AshleyWilliams » Sun Aug 12, 2018 6:34 am

Morning All,

I have a 2.0 MK6 and I’m having difficulty with the starter motor, I think it could be on its way out. But while looking In to this fault. I’ve found a broken / melted overheated wire coming off the jump starting point under the bonnet. There are four wires in total connected to the jump starting point, one large to the battery, one large to the starter motor, one large to the fuse box under bonnet and this smaller black wire about 6mm which also runs to the fuse box but lower down. It certainly doesn’t look like an add on. I’d like to identify what this cable feeds to see why it has overheated. I have a Haynes manual on the way. But any advise on the subject would be appreciated.

Cheers Ash

The broken/melted wire will be the fusible link to the glow plugs. It's melted because one or more of the plugs has gone short circuit, which is very common.

Depending on the type and condition of the engine, you may not need the glow plugs for starting (my old TDDi 85ps didn't) but if you do want to replace them, you need to be very careful not to snap them off in the head!

Hi, thanks for the reply, I managed to get in today and strip down part of the fuse box and engine and found I did indeed have a number of knackered glow plugs. The reason the starter motor wasn’t turning over was due to a loose and corroded + connection. So I’ve cleaned that up and ordered some glow plugs. They where very tight in the head but with some careful back and forwards motion they came out. The van still won’t fire, it had been run out of diesel before I saved it from the scrap man. I’ve filled the filter and the fuel lines from the filter to the pump and bled the diesel through to the injectors. With a quick spray of easy start it does chug a bit, thinking as it’s been sat for a while the glow plugs may help. I know how difficult it is to bleed one of these vans I’m just hoping that it’s worth all the work in the end.

Gents, I’m after some more advice,

Ok I’ve got myself a hand pump but only an 8mm one I’m assuming the correct size is 12mm. I’m guessing the hand bulb pump goes in before the filter? If so when I take it out won’t the fuel just drop back down to the tank again?

Fill fuel filter open all injectors turn it over until fuel squirting out of pipes , tighten pipes and it should start, if you have fuel at pipes and not starting it maybe a timing chain jumped problem

Hi Andy,

Is this the case even if my van hasn’t got a lift pump from the tank? Which I don’t think mine has?

None of the Mk6 or Mk7 diesels have a lift pump in the tank.

Ok so I don’t need to pump the fuel up from the tank? Just fill the filter, crack the injectors and crank it over?

Yes, but be ready to refill the filter a couple of times if it won't stay running. These can be a bu99er to bleed sometimes :!:

Ok so I’ve filled the filter replaced the glow plugs, cracked the injectors with a fully charged battery and turned it over 5 or 6 times. Fuel Is coming out of all the injector fittings at a fare rate. So tightened them up one by one. Turns over but won’t start. I’ve only turned it about 4 times. I’ve put some easy start in and it tries to fire and when I first turn the key it sounds like it wants to go. But then just goes back to cranking. Any advice? Next step?

Assuming that your timing chain hasn't jumped and everything else is spot on you should be able to fire it up . Remove the inlet intercooler hose from the intercooler and while somebody tries to key start it , spray "eazy start" in the intercoller hose and keep at it until it runs on its own . It could backfire once or twice but just keep spraying until runs smooth (keep your face and eyes away from the hose end) .
