Can I run bigger tyres?

Postby Steve192 » Tue Aug 14, 2018 6:55 pm

Hello all,

I have a 2012 mk7 Transit swb t280. It currently has the standard steels with 195/70/15 tyres on. Can, or is, it possible to run a slightly wider tyre, maybe a 205 or even a 215 on the standard 15 inch steels?

Propably your steels are 5,5Jx15". Tyres 205 will work correctly, tyre 205/70R15 has 2,1% bigger diameter, tyre 205/65R15 1,0% smaller.
Tyres 215 are little bit too large for rim 5,5Jx15", should be 6,0Jx15" or 6,5Jx15", but Transit Mk7 doesn't have that size of rims - I think...

But: my standard tyres are also 195, for summer time I use 215 - and my max. speed on larger tyres is about 10 km/h smaller (6,25mph), fuel consumption 1,0l/100km higher (2,8 mpg). So, Quid Pro Quo.

Cheers for the reply mate. Just what I needed to know. I mainly want to have a bigger tyre just for a slightly wider look as the standard tyres look so skinny.

Mate I use the newer transit size as my tyre guy sells nearly new Continental & Michelin for £30 fitted and they're 215 x 65 x 15 tyres on 5.5" rims and although i could do with 6" rims the van drives perfect on 5.5 rim, actually i tried them out on a very twisted road and it definitely grips better on the bends but that"s the widest tyre you'd get away with on 5.5 rim
215 x65x 15 is virtually same hight as 195 x70 x15 so no difference in speedo when i checked using mph on sat nav

Well I had a set of the trend star like allots for my van but sold them and put the steels back on as ya only a work van. But I really want to get a set of newish steel wheels preferably in black. Do the standard custom steels fit straight on a mk7? Or do I also need the chamfered nuts from a custom?

Custom nuts won't fit a mk7 as the thread pattern is different  N

I like the look of the steels off the custom with the black centre caps.

So you’d have to try and find a set of chamfered wheels nuts to run the custom steels on a mk7?

Or are the flat ones ok?

Tyres producers for each tyre size have appropriate rims width. For most correct and safety drivng. A lot of suitable tables are in net.
For tyre 215 best rim is 7", but is permissible from 6" to 8".
I have also tyre 215, but on Ronals R44 6,5Jx16".

On picture:
1. - tyre width - mm
2. - recommended rim width - inch
3. - permissible rim width - inch

On ebay is a lot of tapered nuts M14x2mm. But majority for alloys, closed on one side. It should be like on the picture - I think. I found it on Polish ebay, I can't find on British...
