Oil leak.

Postby Andrew43 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 8:18 pm

Hello to everyone, hopefully you can help me. I've noticed my transit van has developed a slight oil leak. I've had a good look and it looks like it's coming from what I think is the crankshaft pulley/around the sump. It's a mk 6 transit 2.4 lwb, on a 52 plate. Is their a seal on the sump or on the actual crankshaft pulley? I've looked by the vaccine pump and that doesn't appear to be showing any signs of leaking. It's only leaking slightly but id like to get it sorted. Thanks

There's a seal behind crank pully which are prone to leaking but also the actual sump if rusted can have pin holes in the rust spots , best to give it a wash down, clean off oil then see where it starts from when engine running before you start throwing sheckles at it

More likely to be the seal as sump doesn't appear to have any rust, it's a good idea to wash it all down which I will do. How much roughly are the seals? Worst case scenario what would be the cost of a new sump? Thanks

Hi Andrew 43,

Did the leak look something like the attached? I was looking to buy a 2004 transit t135 and this is the front of the engine. Wondering what the cause of the leak was.

Thanks, yeah the leak is at the front like that by the crank pulley. I've cleaned it all, so I can see where the leak starts. Just had a look, nothing yet so must be a small leak.

I had a pretty similar leak on a Euro 5 RWD mk7. Ended up replacing the timing cover and all assosciated seals

Thanks, was it difficult to replace all of those and what sort of price was it all? Mine looks like it's coming from around the crankshaft pulley seal, what was that seal like on your van?

This info is only definite (FOR ME) on a MK7 2.2 FWD Euro 5 engine, but the rubber part of the crank pulley if damaged (cracks in it) will make the pulley rotate unevenly. If left to get very bad it has been known to wear though the timing cover and cause an oil leak. To get to that state where it's wearing down the timing cover though, you SHOULD know because of the terrible knocking sound it makes either constantly or on start up for a few seconds.

Anyone know if this is an issue on the 2.4 RWD MK6/7?

Thanks, there's no knocking noise on mine. The pulleys look quite even. There's a little bit of oil on the filter. Certainly a leak somewhere, it's difficult to see exactly where.

Update- I cleaned the area where the leak appeared to be coming from. It appears there's a slight leak behind the crankshaft pulley. I've taken it to a garage and the mechanic said to keep an eye on the leak. He said if he took the crank pulley out it could open up a whole can of worms. Saying that a new crankshaft pulley is quite expensive. Not sure what the next step is, don't really want an oil leak. Has anybody got any suggestions? Thanks

Do it yourself, removing the pulley won't disturb the seal, three bolts hold the pulley on...but they're fecking tight. If it is the seal, just replace it....but be sure to use a genuine Ford one, we've had issues with non-genuine ones.

Thank you for the reply. It's only a small leak. The guy at the garage seemed to be concerned by removing the pulley. I've never done it before so will all the oil come out once the pulley has been removed? Where can I get the bolts and new seal from? There is oil behind the pulley so it probably is the seal. How difficult is the job and will it get worse if not done? Thanks

as knobby said its 3 tight bolts then pull the seal out. the oil wont gush out-you can take the timing cover off and it still wont gush out. its fairly easy but a high torque impact wrench makes everything easier.
id also find a different mechanic

Thanks for the reply, after I've in done the three bolts do I just take the pulley off to get to the seal? How long shoud it take to do? The mechanic said it could open up a can of worms but by your replys it doesn't seem to hard.

Thanks Andrew
