Mystery button on dashboard

Postby wessex » Thu Aug 16, 2018 12:05 pm

Hey there,

I have recently got hold of an ex utility transit. I think Wessex Water - 2011 mwb med roof RWD t350.

It’s a nice van and came with a leisure battery, orange lights and led worklights.

Two dashboard mysteries. First: to the left of the hazard switch is a green led. Has never come on. Any guesses about this welcome.

Second: there is a small black button on the right hand end of the dash sort of round the corner. More precisely it’s on the black strip to the right of the air vent that sits above the main light switch. Because it’s mounted on the part of the dash that curves round you can’t actually see it from the driving position. Only just noticed it.

It’s a button, not an on/off switch. Can’t work out what it does.

Cheers

it's hard to tell what random buttons do when they've been retrofitted without labels,

at a guess the green LED might be a battery charging indicator, or maybe related to the work lights, LED's do blow so it could be doing something but the bulb is knackered,

the second button, it's in a bit of a strange place, but maybe it's again, related to the lights, it might be best to get a mate to press the button for you and walk round the van and see if any lights come on / flash,

it's also possible being an ex service van, that it's had other bits bolted into it, and they've just been cut out before sale, either way I think your best bet will to be pop the switch out / have a look under the dash and see if you can trace the wires if nothing happens when you get a mate to press it,

Cheers

They will be for equipment added by the utility company that owned the van, equipment which was probably removed when the vehicle was decomissioned by them prior to sale. Things like dash switches and led's are often not removed as they are more hassle to remove than they are worth.

Start the van and try flicking the switch on and removing the keys to see if the engine continues to run as that switch might be for run-lock.

There's no real way of knowing what they were wired to unless maybe someone else on here has previously bought a similar van.

Do the orange lights and led work lights have seperate switches as well? Is the button 'round the corner' in between the door and the dash? Is it a push to make/break button/switch? Does the button get pressed or released when the door is open or closed? Just checked on my MK7 and the gap between door and dash is too big for a push to make/break switch. The positioning of it suggests they wanted quick access without having t reach all the way in the van. Try pulling the switch out with a trim remover and check to see if it is still wired.

Look under your steering and pull off the grey cover for the obd port and get under there and see if you have any wires that have been cable tied up. Stick your hand underneath towards the switch area you and should be able to see/feel if it is still connected.

You could also check the fuse boxes to see if any fuses/wires have been manually put in that are not factory.
