MK7 FWD - Weird steering column squeak - any ideas?

Postby RacinRob » Fri Aug 17, 2018 11:04 am

My MK 7 FWD has developed a squeak from the upper steering column - it appears right below the steering wheel.
When cold/first thing, its as quiet as but within 5 miles, every time you turn the steering wheel it's there.
I removed the shrouds etc but no luck - its still there.
Also replaced the belt etc and all appears fine.
Just before I start stripping the column, I'm asking if anyone has found the same problem before.
Just thinking its a weird one because it only does it when the van warms up.
Cheers

Mine does it too and it is getting worse - and harder to steer as well.

andz327 mentioned "Could be a Dodgy squib" - whatever that might be.

I have tried squirting IPA cleaner followed by PTFE lube without effect.

What I can't figure out is how to get at the top of the bearing to get it into the right spot.

Somewhat frightened about disturbing the airbaaaaaaaaaaaaaghhhhhh!

My garage reckons the cure is to replace the steering column - but I'm not made of money.

Thoughts?

Update:

I got a s/h steering column and my garage fitted it.

They were quite honest about not being sure that was the problem.

Indeed, the original column was just as free to rotate as the replacement.

It ran OK for a fortnight but now the squeak has returned.

Any more thoughts guys?

Uni joints between the column and rack..?? Dry ball joints..??

Give em a spritz with WD40, free to try.

Squeak is inside, for all the world as though it is coming from the squib area - but it ain't that.

Will have a go at the other suggestions.

Thanks guys
