Mk7 aftermarket security

Postby Olliec » Sat Aug 18, 2018 10:20 am

I'm looking into getting my van fitted with an alarm, immobiliser and possibly a tracker before I have it converted into a racevan but I seem to be having problems finding places that offer such services with any reviews.
I've connected a few companies but 2 haven't got back to me and another seemed very expensive.
Just wondering if anyone might have any recommendations on who to use.
I'm living in Somerset but regularly go up to Worcester and also down to Dunstable so quite happy to go within a decent distance of these areas if it's worth it.
The vans a mk7 jumbo.
Thanks

First thing I would do is change the door lock to a Hykee, and that's a DIY easy simple upgrade, that has already saved my van from being broken into

I’d also fit a HykeeLock on drivers door maybe move the or protect the odn port on my van I also use a disc lock I don’t no if they are any easier to get off now that battery grinders are available but it is a visual deterrent

Second shout on moving or locking the OBD port. Another simple and effective deterrent that you can DIY.

I was going to fit a tracker to mine, but research showed that the tea leaves have devices to jam the tracking signal. Alarm is only any good if you can hear it, as no-one else bothers when they go off.

The van already has an immobiliser which can't be tampered with if your OBD port isn't available for them to connect to.

Hykey, disklok, move/Disable the obd and high level hook lock on the sld

Then alarm Clifford/cobra are popular.

I got an Autowatch 2 to 1 system fitted to my van after it was stolen. I am afraid this is just a deterrent and just makes a noise if someone breaks in. I am also going to consider getting a ghost immobiliser put in.

I looked into trackers and the best ones are monitored but have expensive fees. You can get battery operated ones off amazon that you put a PAYG sim card in and you can put a geo fence around it. I opted for one of these and the battery lasts a month. Mine has a strong magnet and you can hide it in the structure of the van. You can contol it using your smart phone and you can text it from any phone to get your vans location on google maps.

As said above make sure you have a Hykee lock and disklok, before you even get your alarm.

Also get rear door loom guards:

Racevan = tools = DEAD LOCKS also

and then get an alarm.

I think there are also some brackets you can have fitted to the side door that stop it from getting pried open.

Ok great thanks for your advice.

So far on the shopping list I have a Hykee lock an obd lock and rear loom guards.

Whilst looking at the Hykee lock I saw that they also do a bezel or upgraded armaplate. Which one of these would be best to fit?

The van already came with dead locks fitted to the side and rear doors. I did enquire about getting a high level hook lock but not sure just how necessary it would be once the vans converted as there will be a window in the side door.

Was also thinking along the lines of either a disk lock or pedal lock box.

The aftermarket alarm and immobiliser are something I'm definitely going to get as at least I'll be able to hear it going off if nothing else and might be enough to make them give up.

Still undecided on the tracker though as it is a lot of money. The 2 I have been looking into though are the Clifford and Cobra trackers.

Are you talking about the round spinning bezel that is an extra addition to the Hykee lock?

Armaplate or the spinning bezel is fine I reckon. Both going to do the same thing, stop people from digging into it with a screw driver. I suppose the armplate due to it's size will be very good protection for the Hykee lock.

Get a DISKLOK first, because at first glance a pedal box isn't going to put anyone off. You already have deadlocks fitted, that's really good.

Remember with the original DISKLOK (if you go for that brand of disk lock which is the best of it's style) you have to get the SMALL size regardless of whether you have a regular steering wheel or Trend steering wheel as it is the best and only size for the MK7 transit steering wheel.

Do all the mechanical things first then the alarm.

Yeah that's the bits.

Is Hykee the type of lock or the manufacture? I've noticed while looking through more websites that there seem to be a few manufactures that make similar looking locks.

Thanks for the tip on the diskloc and the links

Interesting point about 'Hykee' never thought about whether it was a brand or... I always thought it was just a type of lock. Every company I have seen online seems to call it a Hykee or Hykee replock.

Youtube sussex installations, the curly hair guy does some great videos. Would be quite beneficial for you. Will give you a good idea of what you need/want for your van.

I googled Hykee on it's own and something worrying came up further down, but I'm not going to link to it here.

Having a Hykee lock is 100% better than having the standard lock that's for sure.
