I did an egr delete on my mk7, but before i did I took the egr cooler off, egr valve, mixer pipe and inlet manifold and gave them an almighty clean. Initially I let everything soak in a large bucket of boiling water and Bold 2in1 washing powder. Then lift the parts in and out a good few times and to soften the gunk. Then empty the water with washing power out which will look blacker than a black hole at this point. Then the thing I found best to use which really surprised me was CIF POWER & SHINE KITCHEN ULTRA DEGREASER. Don't burn your hands, because they will be hot from the boiling water; take your wet parts put them on a bench and spray the CIF POWER & SHINE KITCHEN ULTRA DEGREASER into every nook and cranny and watch in amazement at how well it works at breaking down that horrible gunk, use some kind of thin long plastic brush to attack the dirt once you have sprayed it up. On a lot of my parts I had to spray and clean multiple times just to get it really really clean. Wilko has a special offer right now; £1.50 for that CIF stuff which is very cheap. Normally it's £2.50/3, but it is superb quality stuff.
On my EGR valve, I took the little thing off held by 4 screws that actually physically turns to open the valve and stuck a bolt in the gap so the EGR is held open and drowned it out in the CIF degreaser and this also allows you to run plenty of water threw it. Do this at the first stage when you let everything soak in a bucket for a while.
The reason I decided to clean my EGR cooler as well was because I bought a standard egr delete plate off ebay for in between valve/cooler, but decided to make one for the other side, where the cooler meets the manifold. So now my entire egr system is blocked from the manifold side, which means no exhaust gas enters the cooler at all which means it all stays clean.
