2010 transit crew cab coolant problem

Postby Pickle1 » Sat Aug 18, 2018 9:39 pm

2010 transit crew cab tipper 104000 miles

Hi everyone, I was driving to work the other week and the temperature gauge went into the red and the van went into limp mode, pulled over and the temperature dropped and van went back to normal. Did this a further 4 times, had to keep topping up the coolant up to 1.5 litres to travel 50 miles. Since then I’ve only had to top it up a fraction and the temperature gauge has never gone above midway. Egr has been blanked and it has been remapped. Someone mentioned head gasket but surely the coolant issue would be ongoing if this was the case??

Many Thanks

Probably the EGR cooler has died, are you getting steam/white smoke out the exhaust..??

Any oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil..??

It does smoke a bit when you put your foot down.

Checked the dipstick and filler cap but no sign of coolant likewise no sign of oil in the coolant.

What’s the best way to check if it’s the egr cooler?

Is your 2010 a 2.4? On my 2.2 the egr is water cooled, I'm wondering whether unplugging the two water hoses that go into the egr cooler and joining them together with a 15mm copper pipe with some jubilee clips and driving around a while will help. That is, if it stops loosing coolant and overheating, then your egr cooler is probs buggered.

On my 2010 Jumbo 2.4, I had the same issue, water loss, but it didn't overheat, I just saw it trickling down underneath one day. Turned out to to be the main hose that comes out of the waterpump had a hole init, but I had to feel the whole length of the pipe to feel where the hole was. These Transit plastic hoses love getting little holes from rubbing up against each other and other engine components.

EGR cooler is not part of the EGR valve, so by-passing the EGR valve coolant lines will have no effect on a leaking cooler assembly. On the Mk7 2.4 the cooler is a separate assembly runs behind the cyl head and has it's own coolant hoses which are separate to the EGR valve hoses.

Sorry mate complete misunderstanding, I THINK, what I meant was bypassing the EGR cooler not the EGR valve. So on a 2.2 euro 5, I'm sure you can disconnect the two coolant pipes from the EGR COOLER and connect them together. If this fixes an issue with coolant loss, will that not show that the egr cooler is at fault? My knowledge is limited and the OP didn't identify whether his engine was a 2.4 or 2.2, that's why I highlighted that it can be done on a 2.2 to test the cooler.

Mr. K, what you have described above including the very good diagram you have linked to, apart from location is very similar to the set up on a 2.2 euro 5, so to test the cooler on his 2.4 can the OP not just disconnect the two coolant hoses that go into the cooler, connect them together and see whether he still has issues? If not, would that not show him his cooler is buggered like you called it in the first place, regardless of whether it is a 2.4 or 2.2?
