Sump humming noise

Postby bangertrack » Sun Aug 19, 2018 12:14 pm

Hi all,

Mk7 t350 fwd 125hp 2.2. 2012

Have a humming noise from the sump. When put hand on the sump can feel it vibrating - when press hard can considerably reduce the noise.

Removed both alternator and steering pump belts and makes no difference.

Oil pump replaced on recall at 68k miles now on 101k. Oil + filter changed at approx 8k intervals.

Any ideas - guess it a sump off job and have a look?

Thanks
Will

Has it been like that since you bought the van? Have you checked your sump bolts are tight? Noticed any oil leaks at all? Even the slightest weeping at the edge where the sump meets the engine? Perhaps your sump gasket is buggered?

They don't have a gasket......just sealant.

No leaks.

I have removed the sump and found no visible problems. Waiting for a new pump (£70 so may as well while apart) although the current one turns smoothly. Sump and strainer very clean. The strainer has 4 little legs on the inlet (assume to ensure there is a gap for oil flow if the sump touches) - and these do not touch the sump - put some tipex on them and offered up the sump.

I hope to have the pump by lunchtime and fitted - see whether it makes any difference

Strangely enough you can actually get a gasket for them, not OEM though..... But we find it causes the mating face to bend as the gasket compresses when the nuts are tightened to the correct torque....causing even more leaks.

Hi

I found this thread on the net amd joined the forum because of it, I realise its an older one but its the exact same issue I've come across.
I am looking at buying a 2012 T280 - 100BHP, 6 speed manual.
Looked it over and its mint but there is this hum from the front end, exactly as described on here. I took a 20 sec video but don't think I can upload it here.
When layiind under the vehicle there to the drivers side there is something that you can see rotating and I thnk the noise is coming from there. However, there is also a vibration when you put your hand on the sump. Maybve its just oil circulating but I've never noticed this on any car I own as they all have undertrays attached.
Any ideas or update of this thread from the originator? I did try and private message him but there was no contact option that I could see.
Thanks in advance!
