MK7 diesel fuel leak

Postby Sam123 » Tue May 07, 2019 3:42 pm

Hi all

First post as a new member! I'm completely new to Transits and indeed Fords.

I recently bought a 2013 Mk7 Jumbo (2.2 155ps Euro 5) - ex AAH pharma delivery van. We are planning to convert it into an 'offgrid' camper, but that's another story which I'll be creating a blog on.

I'm slowly working through the various problems and niggles that come with any new car/van to get it up to the standard that I like. One issue I have spotted and which I'd appreciate any comment to point me in the right direction on is a diesel leak.

Just after I bought the van I was filling up with diesel, all fine for the first 60/70 ish litre and then I heard loud rain, carried on filling for 10 seconds until I smelt diesel and got wet feet, only to realise that the rain was in fact diesel pissing out of the tank - coming out as fast as I was putting it in. Probably about 10 litres on forecourt floor. The pump hadn't clicked off as full.

Fuel gauge showed full, and after initial leak at pump there is no more diesel leaking and tank seems to be able to handle ostensibly full tank without leaking.

I have been under the van to have a look, hoping the leak was just a loose jubilee clip on the filler hose - but no. As far as I can make out the leak seems to be coming from top-centre and of course is hidden from view.

I am going to wait until the tank is near empty to drop it and have a look, but in advance of that, in case I need to buy parts, are there any common problems here. I understand that the low pressure lift pump goes through a top-centre aperture, and so I guess its possible the leak is from there. Odd thing though, like I said is that at the time the leak was full flow as fast as it was going in, not just a trickle, but doesn't leak at all now the tank is down to 80% full.

Grateful of any ideas!

Thanks. Sam

Sam the small overflow pipe goes from the filler to the top of the fuel tank, they do split and I had to replace mine and the bosses, unless someone has interfered with the tank sender or something else I'd bet it is this pipe.
Do as you've said and be prepared for the pipe to be split, very common.

I think for what they are too they're quite expensive from Ford.

Thanks for reply Loot.

Am I right in thinking that you are referring to part 9A034/9170 on the above diagram?

Thanks

To follow up on this for posterity, turns out the leak was due to a split in the filler overflow pipe (part 9170 in the image) - thanks for help.

But for some reason ford wanted over £100 for the part, which is just a length of fuel hose. Bought a metre of generic fuel hose (ID=15.5mm, OD=21mm) for a fiver which fixed it.

It's called future revenue. They need to guarantee that they can keep earning money when there's not much else going wrong.

You don't think it is a coinsidence that things break just as warranty runs out

Ah well it's good that you sorted it yourself 8)

I had this the other weekend..

5P of a Liter from morrison. Happly ran down to fumes and went to fill up. Got 70 and the pump clicks off with a gushing overflowing sound.. Sure enough my 5p's were hitting the forecourt. It dropped a bit over the next day or so until I ran it down a bit..

it possibly explains the increased stench of Diesel over the last few months..

Just got to fix it now.

Great to find this thread a few years later!
I have the same embarassing problem that occurred at the petrol station.
Looking under the van it looks to me like mine has been bodged, or is it me? There are two pieces of rubber hosing with a metal piece between them and 3 hose clamps. Can anyone confirm my suspicions that the metal pipe (9170?) has been cut?
Thanks!
