non starter 2.4

Postby Cookeg » Sat Feb 24, 2024 9:11 am

Hi guys, 2004 2.4 ASM. Drove to destination, running like a dream. 2 hours later tried to start, turns over rapidly but does not fire. Checked fuel to injectors and getting there with stacks of pressure. Checked crankshaft position sensor, resistance good and waving over spare flywheel produced minor voltage. Replaced with new one anyway just be double sure. Shows revs on forscan when cranking. No error messages. Removed oil filler tube and cam turning ok. Aerostart directly into manifold at EGR and doesn't fire. Replaced clutch 2 weeks ago and running like a dream since. Apart from crank position sensor all wiring unplugged related to ASM which is still doing all the right things. displaying revs would indicate sensor is working ok. double checked wiring and plugs anyway all looks ok. I would have thought aerostart would at least give it a kick, but nothing.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Further to the last, I now have P1631 error, 'powertrain control module main relay ' on the FIP and PCM.

lf it doesn't fire with a sniff of easy start, you may have cam timing issues.

Thanks Knobby,
Was also cranking very fast. I have removed front of van and will remove timing chain cover tomorrow and rocker cover. See what happening. I figure at 190K I should change anyway as I will do a trip around the top later this year hopefully.

Had a nice break in china, then got Covid, and now back to van.
Changed timing chain, tensioner & gears. All of which appeared fine, but changed anyway as I already had a new set. Still a non-starter but now have some new codes. Fro what I have read theses seem to indicate fuel pump.
P0403 EGR valve position circuit
P1666 FIP crank reference sync
P1564 FIP demending reduced fuelling mode

Anything else that may give me similar errors?

Have you removed the fuel filter to check its full of fuel ?

Recently replaced the cylinder head on one of our vans. Couldn’t get it to start and this was the reason

Worth a try !

loosened fuel line at injectors and its pumping heaps of fuel up there. Dont know at what pressure though. Will have a play with Forscan this week and see what I can work out. Dont really know much about it so will have to some learning. I dont know if it can tell me fuel pressure or not.
