top end noise??

Postby transit virgin » Thu Sep 04, 2008 2:08 pm

I've got a high pitch taping/pinking noise coming from the top of the engine, it increases and decreases with the revs. someone has told me that it's an injector? but i just thought I'd see if anyone knows if this is a common problem? it's a 51 350 lwb if that helps?

Oh yes, it's worse in the morning!!!

thanks in advance,

Anthony.

Could be a hydraulic tappet failing,or the roller wheel on other end of rocker arm, bearing collapsing...

You would need rocker cover off to check.

I have a 2003 2.4 transit & have a loud tappet-type noise, increasing over he last few hundred miles. Took off the rocker cover & found the inlet rocker lifters variable. some seemed to have non-return valves working, others not working but the tappet noise seemed single! Some lifted freely others would only compress in a vice. Does anyone have experience of sticking non-return valves in transit 2.4 rockers?
ps its a 90-350

hi, doesnt seem that many people on here know much about the tappets/lifters.
ive got the same problem mate. 7 loose as you like and the rest solid.
havent tried putting them in a vice though.
i just want/need to know what a knackered rocker/lifter looks/ feels like as i must need to replace the ones that have exessive play. but how about the solid ones. have they siezed and are THEY the ones coursing the tapping??

first time ive seen any rockers on any vehicle

hi
if the engine has recentely been running then there should be no play in the hydraulic lifters, if there is then they are the ones that need replacing, simples
it was like that before i touched it !!

Thread is near 14 years old now...so it may be better to start your own thread.
