Mk7 EGR valve - Disconnect?

Postby pusd » Mon Jan 05, 2009 12:23 am

Hi, is it possible to disconnect the EGR valve to prevent it's operation?
If so are there any benefits or side effects and how is this best achieved without activating the engine management light?

Reason I ask is that I have had good results from disconnecting their operation in older (mechanical pump) diesels and have heard of quite a few EGR failures causing running problems.

Cheers all, Phil

If you unplug it it brings on the management light

Is there any other ways, like, making a plate to block the passage between the exhaust & inlet tract?
This would leave the egr fully working but still block the flow of gasses???
Anyone done this?

Cheers, Phil

It's been suggested that you could take out the middle gear to stop it moving the valve.

Back in the early days we used to just put a ball bearing in the pipe entrance

I think that throws up a fault on the MK7.

Mk7`s are electric not vacuum so that`s not "applicable".

So, has anyone had a go at disconnecting the EGR - by removal of the middle gear (sounds interesting) or any other means (except pulling the multiplug & putting on the E/M light).
Don't want to start fiddling with too complex stuff only to find that she runs like a dog or still ends up putting the engine management light on!

In the good old days of diesels I used to simply put a 1" long piece of nail into the vacuum pipe....

Cheers all

Tried blanking mine off with a plate where pipe fits on the back of EGR..... no joy..... drilled a small hole in it
still no joy, both ways threw MIL light on.
At the moment EGR is knackered so running with a blanking plate with MIL light on cos it won't pull
me granny off her p@@s pot with out it.
Apparently there is a completely new revised EGR been released with seperate electrics,
which according to a reliable mechanic at my local stealers is the problem, something to do with the
heat from the EGR.
He's ordered one for me just waiting delivery, will keep you posted when it comes

How much is an EGR valve if i had to buy 1? Mines still on its original with only occasional rough idle (normally only when very cold out) Or should i get it sorted under warranty b4 it knacks? vans done 19k and just over 2 years old.
The only mk7 still with ORIGINAL egr valve!!!!!!

If its only done that get it sorted on warranty. Mines done 144,000 so had to buy mine. This is the 2nd one I've
bought, but 2 previously fitted on warranty £97+ VAT trade
