The egr is constantly varying the amount it's open depending on the throttle position, load demand and boost pressure :!:

So these have MAP and a MAF sensor :?

I take it the square with the plug in the inlet is the MAF

yep, they have the maf in the intake pipe with the square black
plug with little red tab and the tmap is in the elbow that bolts to the inlet manifold :!:

at least theyve moved it to a better position to get actuall boost right at manifold.

i cant see how increacing the length of the pipe is any different to just blanking it with a check valve to only allow air in :? :? :? :?

think about it, there will always be boosted air on the intake, youll never get a vacumn, so a check valve would be permanatley closed.

How about one of these? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electric-Supercha ... -HP-Turbo- new_W0QQitemZ390090151998QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item5ad32f583e

You could use it to just push air through the EGR to keep it happy.

Or if not how about a heater fan or one of those electric model engine fans wired into the ignition?

what i dont understand is on your mondeo how the pipe has hepled it, surely its the same as blocking it off??

The length os pipe may allow a small amount of air to be stored, and then released, like Winter says, like an expansion vessel, maybe thats why it works, Try it and see Guy

this is the pipe, i still have no faults stored and no light.

i disconnected when it was running to check EGR was open and a fair bit of air comes out at idle.
with it connected if i squeeze the pipe, you can feel it pulsing, the EGR normally pulses like this.

main thing is it works, at least on the mondeo.

Just to add my experience,on a mk7 85ps 280fwd i blanked the exhaust side of the egr valve, the light came on after 3 days no change in fuel consumption or power but it has totally stopped the puffs of smoke you see when following modern diesel vehicles.have now done 21000 miles with no problems, just passed MOT last week the tester said the emission reading was one of the lowest he had seen.

I just wish we could get rid of all this EGR nonsense, still, no other method of emisions control is working either, seems any one with a Diesel Particulate Filter has even worse & bigger problems & bills

Please could you give us a summary of the final solution as I have kind of lost track!

From your pics, it looks like a looped hose on the exhaust side of the EGR, is that it or am I missing something?

Cheers, Phil

conclusion is i had a slight weep on one of the joints  which was enough to simulate exhaust flow, but sealed it up again, and light came on as i dont feel confident in having any sort of boost leaks, as it would stress turbo too much.

Just been reading this post i realise its a while since the last post but i have an idea probably a non starter, here goes can the pipe from the exaust be blanked off then loop the pipe from the inlet to both sides of the egr valve surely this will fool the sensor to air movement within the unit whilst it is open but keeps the unit perfectly clean and operational thus reducing the risk of it failing, no loss of boost etc, as i say probably a non starter but i thought it might be worth mentioning. :?:

Why cant it be switched off in the ECU?

If the ECU controls it surly the ECU can be told not to open unless say on full throttle or max rpm?

Maybe Martin can rewrite that in somewhere?

Over to you Martin.
