  Never thought of the dropside  not familiar with them but you would think there should be some sort of anti-theft device

Mine was stolen from outside my house the other night, also from a new Mk 7.... Ford have made it all too easy to cut the winch cable under the back of the van. When I get round to buying a new one, I don't want it in the back of the van because it would get int he way too much. I remember seeing someone advertising a steel bracket and sleeve to protect the vulnerable bit of cable a while ago but I can't think who or where...

I agree with limitedblack on this one - 'Shame on you Ford!'

How about if you could somehow cover the cable with the tube things on motorcyle locks, that way they would have to cut them off first before getting to the cable, I know it would put me off, and of course if they're using a hacksaw they'd just spin.

I imagine they get nicked in the night so probably wouldn't even see it, let alone expect it.

A main dealer near me had 18 brand new vans releaved of there spares on the one night. Now why would Ford want to change the set up when they can sell 18 carriers 18 wheels and there mates who make the tyres sell 18 of them for brand new vans in one shot . .Why change the recipe why you can make a nice cake for yourself.
On the sixth day God created a Sprinter on the seventh he gave it away and bought a TRANSIT

My motorhome has the stupid wind down spare carrier mounted amid ships.

I have studied the problem and the only way I can see of improving security would be to fit a motorcycle chain round the wheel and through the chassis, there might be a couple of places to fix the chain to.

They stole mine by breaking off the foam surrounding the cable and cutting the cable between the wheel and rear bumper. Never been removed from new. So if it was fitted wrong it came from the factory like that!

The wind up part on the rear panel is like a fishing rod cut the cable and the wheel drops

Had mine nicked the other day...van was locked, doors not forced, spare was in place tight in its space...came out to find the "locking" cable dangling on the floor, spare and mount cable cut and spare gone...
So this was no chance, someone knows how and has a tested method..
This has just cost me £300 !!
So....is there an alternative/additional way of securing them..?
In the van in my case, is not an option..

I do security modifications to make sure it doesn't get nicked again. I've welded a steel tube over the vulnerable cable and use a bicycle D lock in addition to secure the wheel. Let me know if you want me to do yours! I'm Reading based.
