Transit Engine Change, Wont Start!

Postby Spainmechanic » Wed Oct 13, 2010 2:29 pm

Hi All,
Really hope you can help with this, I am new to the forum.

I am a mechanic in Spain, and we have just changed the engine in a Brit reg 02 plate transit with the 90 horse engine in it.

The Old engine decided to lock up solid, so we had a supposedly good second hand engine shipped over from the uk.

In the process of changing the engine, I swapped over all the electrical parts of the pump from the old engine onto the new donor engine.(solonoid between the injector pipe outlets, solonoid at rear of pump under these, the main control box on the top of the pump, and the sensor on the trigger wheel in the middle of the pump, under the top plate.

I also swapped the injectors for the originals, and have changed the fuel filter.

Everything primes up as it should, there is a good strong pulse of fuel at the back of each injector when the nuts are cracked off, the timing has not been disturbed, and it cranks over strongly, with good compression.

(Naughty as it is, it does fire up on a little bit of ahem, brake cleaner, it is as if the injectors refuse to open)

The little red LED to the right of the clock blinks slowly with the ignition off, comes on for a couple of seconds when you turn te ignition on, and then goes off, which I believe to be normal...?

I would be really grateful of any advice anyone can give!

Cheers,

Rob

i would say you need to recode the injectors by the sounds of it........

This is something I am a bit unsure about, forgive me if I am wrong, but this is a mechanical injection engine, there are no wires to the injectors, how can they be coded?

Is it Tdci?
If not then the injectors will not need recoding.

Make shure you fit a genuine filter s aftermarket ones have given me loads of trouble in the past

Would it have not been better to change the pump over rather than just parts of it??

yes in hindsight it would have been easier to change the pump complete, it seemed the easier thing to change just the eletronics with the engine in the van. It is not a TDCI it is just a regular old 90 horse mechanical injection engine.,..... Someone told me the pumps and the electronics are matched and calibrated together, and electronics can not be swapped between pumps.... I still think with fuel up to the back of the injectors it should run,, either a bit lean or a bit rich, pumps can not be that different one to the other surely?

if you have a good pulse of fuel at the injectors it is not a problem with pump coding, as they wont let fuel through unless the ecu is happy with codes,
you say you have used the injecors from the knackerd engine? if you got injectors with the replacement engine try them as you correctly say they are not coded
failing that, id be tempted to try a tow start or if possible get it on the scanner and see what codes are listed and read any live data you can,

I have tried both sets of injectors in the old girl, and both give the same results, cranks over and wont fire.... It has a new MANN fuel filter on and all is bled up nicely. she just does not want to fire...

I thought it was inadviseable to tow this model?

Will get a decent scanner on it and see what it says...

If you do try tow starting it, remember to pull it from rest in 3rd gear, as dropping the clutch while moving can cause the cam chain to jump teeth

Just thought a mention But did you cut the wires on the pump when you change bits over I think it would it be worth a check if you did and I was gonna say are the injectors in the right order.

I had the same porblem when I changed my engine, in the end I had the ecu system programed by ford coded everything no messing, then linked up a power pack to battery, cracked the injector pipes and cranked the engine it took ages because there was alot of air trapped even though i thought it was primed, it did start to fire up, I locked the injectors off kept it reving and she was alive again.

I don't think they need to be in any particular order on a TDDi :?

Thanks for all the help. I did not cut any wires, simply took great care in stripping the bits out of the pump and transferring them over, so there are no broken or cut wires anywhere. The diesel pipes only seem to fit on one way so I am pretty sure the firing order remains intact.

I cant see how it will need recoding because the imob light is doing as it should, coming on at the first turn of the key and going off again after 3 seconds or so.....not flashing...

I will persevere, and let you all know my progress..... Thank you all for the help!!!

Seven year old thread, you'll be lucky if any of the posters (apart from me!) are still reading the forum.

I would start your own new thread if you're having any problems, different people, fresh ideas, and all that :D
