Real glad I caught this post.

If the starter motor fails you are basically screwed till it's replaced?

Is it only a big No NO if the engine is cold? A warm engine and you are fine?

You could damage a warm engine as well if the tensioner was knackered

Its not only bumping them that damages them,if its not been run for a while timing will jump just from trying to start it with key as i found out yesterday after looking at my cousins van thats not been run for a few months. So the advice there is,if your not gonna use your van for a good while, make sure you start it regularly.

And again, only if the MECHACANICAL RATCHET PART OF THE tensioner is not doing its job and has to rely on the oil pressure building up.....

Was looking at a mk7 timing chain set up the other day. Only Single chain and similar chain tensioner as the crap plate one. Didn't really notice anything different maybe just the guides looked better????

thanks for this, my old van - citroen relay - was terrible starter in cold weather (and sometimes hot) and, as I live on a hill, I'd just roll it down to start it. Managed to stall the transit one morning just as I pulled out (blush) and didn't think twice about rolling her down and bumping it - just for old times sake haha, funnny thing was it didn't seem to want to start with a bump so i had to pull over and use the key, any reason why that would have been?

Thanks again for the info, and I won't be doing it again
