put it on a weight bridge as depending on what options fitted makes a diffrence to what it weighs..plus you need it loaded with how you normally load it including fuel.

max weight of your van can be 2800kg (280) so if gtw is 3500 and your van is at 2800 you can tow a trailor up to 700kg
if your van was empty bar you and fuel it may be 1800 kg (this is only a guess) so you would be able to tow 1700kg.
you need to have alook at plate to see how heavy van is empty.then add driver/fuel and what ever else you are carrying
as stated fill up with fuel and go to a weigh bridge to get correct weights,
the 280 is near bottom of the weight class on the transit

A van with a MGVW of 2.8 tonnes and a max TRAIN (total of van & trailer) weight of 3.5 tonnes

As said - you need to know a couple of things and will need a weighbridge to find these out

UNLADEN or KERB weight which is when the van is empty with a full tank of fuel and you in the driving seat

The weights of the van and it's trailer when loaded for a number of reasons -
To check that neither the van, the trailer or the total of the two have exceeded the GVWs
To check that you have the correct licence to drive it

LICENCE ISSUE
B licence - The UNLADEN weight of the VAN must be MORE than the plated MAM weight (GVW) of the TRAILER (if no plate fitted then the load rating of the tyres will count)
B+E licence - Safety recommendations say that the actual weight TRAILER should not be more than 85% of the actual weight of the VAN at any time or you can get the 'tail wagging the dog' situation

Yes a RWD 330 or a 350
FWDs are not plated for towing as much as RWD

Wasn't the 100ps you found a fwd ? if so check the weights it can tow ! Even though it's a 330 it might not be able to tow the weight you require due to being fwd ! British Gas got fwd 330's for the payload not towing.

I'm sure I read on my van that I can tow up to about 1200kilos,

A car can tow that so why not a van.

My 85/280 FWD has a towing capacity (stated on the V5) of 1550kg. Obviously, with a max train weight of 3500kg, the van would need to only be lightly loaded for that to be possible :|
