2004 key problem

Hi I've got a mate who has been having problems with a worn ignition barrel, he replaced the barrel and for a while he has kept the old key in close proximity to deactivate the immobiliser, he tried to swap the chips in the key today and basically fooked it by breaking it in half. Can the replacement key be coded to the van or will he need a new set, or can the system be overridden somehow, or is there another solution...thanks
