Vehicles V5 is a legal document and will stand in court. Mine states 1200Kg.

All to nought if you can't get a 1200Kg rated towbar though.

Manufacturers towing limit is legal. It's listed on vehicles type approval cert
If not listed then GTW is used instead.

According to V5 for a Connect I have here. It can tow 1600kg max

I can tell you now. It can't legally tow that weight. Even when van is empty.....
It's a Connect T200 with a GTW of 2835kg. Trailer/caravan would also be heavier than unladen kerb weight of van.

GTW is the main weight that must NOT be exceeded when towing. Regardless what max towing weight listed on V5 :!:

If you wish to tow 1200kg Caravan. Connect T230 LWB should be ok. Although best to get your exact weight on weighbridge  8)
Connect T200 SWB ideally are not suitable due to lower GTW than T230 LWB
