Postby FixOnRoadDaily » Fri May 17, 2013 1:51 am

my gear selector cable has broke on 57 reg connect van part number 1764202,
ford want £170 anyone got any ideas to get cheaper ?
and is it east to fit this part ?
I presumed I would tie string to the old part then pull the new cable through hole, sounds easy..

anyone offer any tips ?

thanks in advance.

unfortunately its not as easy as dragging it through with string lol

you have to remove the exhaust heat shield and I removed the airbox to reveal the top of the gearbox, remove the center console plastics (the plastics around the gear leaver and handbrake) and cut the carpet to reveal a metal plate that is securing the gear leaver cables through the body, remove the bolts securing the metal plate, detach the cables from the bracket on the gearbox, detach the cables from the gear leaver and gearbox mech and remove the cables, fitting is the reverse but you may have to set the play in the cables with the yellow locking tabs at the gearbox end.

I found Ford are the only manufactures of the cables when I replaced mine.

took me about an hour as I had to jack the van up and put it on axle stands to gain access underneath.

first get the cable cost £ 116.00 good start
next take out center plasic next take off bottom of heat cover
next cut the carpet the two nuts are under it
in the van.
push though cable helps to have a ramp
joint up cable set gear put all the bits back
time 2 hours with 2 people and use of a ramp
not one of the worlds easy jobs.
hope your,s dont snap.
hope this helps some one.
